Hi
Please could someone decipher the occupation of Robert Hepplewhite in the following 1871 census (surrounded with a red box): https://imgur.com/a/y288D
Many thanks

I see Woodsman.

Herdsman?
Carol

First letter is the same as the W in William - looks like Wardman but no such occ, so go with Woodman

I went on another angle. Tried for an employer. Probably Lord Lambton. On the map I can see he had woods but herds I do not know.
I am sitting on the fence. Lord Lambton's fence. Put your computer on Find and there are three mentions of Harraton highlighed in yellow in the article,

I think he is a Woodsman.
If I have found the right Robert, in 1881 he is a Gamekeeper (born Scotland?), which is a related occupation.

Woodman/Woodsman for me, too. The enumerator writes clear enough esses but has (also) left one off the first surname on the page (David(s)on).
Peter

Woodsman for me.

Definitely a W ... compare with H of Head
