Title: Phone memory
Post by: SmallTownGirl on Wednesday 13 December 17 13:41 GMT (UK)
My Samsung Galaxy J5 has until May 2018 before I can replace it under my current contract.

Lately I've been getting messages to the effect that there's not enough room for the system to download updates to the apps.  The last time I managed to stop a few of the apps that I've never used/heard of/don't know what they are/do, but I'm now getting the not-enough-room messages again.  Is there anything [simple] that I can do to resolve this, pls?

I think I've only added three apps - FB Messenger, NatWest and AVG.

Also, AVG sends a message each day saying there's x-amount in the cache that needs clearing and so I clear the cache accordingly.  Usually it's approx. 250-300MB (or it is KB, I never understand this), but in the last few days it's up to approx. 750, yet I haven't done anything different with my phone to account for the increase in size.

Any ideas, peeps?

Thanks
STG

How much storage does your phone actually have, for instance mine has 32GB? If you've only got those 3 apps they shouldn't take up much room at all. Have you got lots of photos etc stored on the phone?

All my photos are on an SD card, rather than in the phone's memory.  Phone has 8GB and is using 7.54GB.

I've only downloaded three apps, but the phone came pre-loaded with all sorts of others.  I've already uninstalled a few (e.g. Skype) that I don't use/can't imagine ever using.

Have you looked in settings to see how much memory it says you have left?

Not sure how your Samsung works but I can check memory of my iPhone by SETTINGS >>> GENERAL >>> STORAGE & iCLOUD STORAGE. From there (which shows both used & available) I can click on MANAGE STORAGE to get a breakdown from photos, mail, etc.

I use Power Clean on my iPhone after it was recommended to me. This checks and clears a lot of rubbish. I think this is the one for Android.

I was also told that the Facebook App takes up quite a bit of memory and it is better to access it via your browser, which is what I do now.

I've already disabled/uninstalled the FaceBook app.  :(

If you are on contract still, I'd be going down to the local mobile service provider and ask them to look at solving the space issue. They have been helpful to me in the past.

Good idea.  I'll add it to my list of Things To Do when I'm in town tomorrow!

Thanks

Problem solved by moving some of the apps to the SD card.

Thanks for your help  :-*
