Title: Birth Certificate Annie Hall
Post by: Druid56 on Thursday 14 December 17 23:51 GMT (UK)
Hi I am trying to discover  who the parents were of Annie Hall. I believe she was born 25 Feb 1868 possibly in Church Stretton  .I have her in 1871 census as a 3 year old living in Cardington with her grand parents ,Job Hall and Dorothy his wife  as well as Maria their daughter and another 5 children under the age of 6, she has Job as her father on her marriage cert but I believe this maybe because he brought her up  again there is a family story that says she may have been born in a poorhouse any help would be appreciated

Job & Dorothy have 4 granddaughters and 2 grandsons living with them in 1871 and all are shown as born in Cardington.  They also have a 27yr old unmarried daughter with them

Any chance this is her birth reg - GRO online shows no mmn so illegitimate.

Births March qtr 1868
HALL    Emma Ann  Church Stretton    6a   566

Grandson Henry born 1866 also shows no mmn and neither does Hannah b 1864

There is an entry in the School Admission Log or Cardington C Of E School

Admission Feb 1874
No entry for baptism
Name Ann Hall
Parent Maria Hall
Address Cardington
DOB 25 Feb 1868

There are also records for a brother called Job Hall (born 6 May 1872) showing mother as Maria Hall. He was baptised. School admission records also name Maria Hall b 1871 as daughter of Maria. There are also baptism records in Cardington showing that Hannah and Henry were also Maria's illegitimate children.

Baptism records would suggest that the other two grandchildren showing in the 1871 census,James and Jane were the children of Philip and Fanny Hall (the baptism for Jane is showing father as deceased).

Good find, Cas. I only checked the Cardington baptisms (presumably the baptisms showing in the Cardington C of E  School register come from the Cardington parish records).

It would appear that mother Maria had all her children baptised as there is also a baptism record for her daughter Maria in Easthope Parish. ( Illegitimate privateley, Child: Maria, Parent: Maria Hall, Abode: Cardington Parish, Occupation: Servant 8 Sept 1870).

The baptism found by Cas may well back up your family story of Annie being born in the Workhouse, Both Cardington and Easthope were part of the Church Stretton Union. I was interested to see, having been a Shropshire Lad for many years, that the workhouse was demolished in 1959 and its site is now occupied by part of Church Stretton School.

Also note that there is a burial in Cardington 30 Sept 1873 for a Maria Hall age 33. (age slightly out as other evidence would suggest born in 1843).

Hi William, think very likely that is the death of Maria in 1873.

Druids - Online tree for Job b1808 - d1876 Cardington, which goes back a few generations. Would verify info with owner.

https://www.werelate.org/wiki/Person:Job_Hall_(4) do a search if link has no info.
