It would seem that Mary Hancock Minear was a base child of Jane Minear a victualler ( Ring Of Bells).Refer baptism St Austell 6 April 1834.Jane was already widowed.
I think Mary married my William Henry Harry June Qtr 1853, as Mary Hancock Minear.They later migrated to Australia.
Unless I am mistaken , Mary is identified as Mary M Hancock a servant aged 17 on the 1851 Census Union Rd Charlestown.
In 1861 , Mary Harry, her husband and two children are living next door (155 and 156) to the Davey family at the Union Rd address.
Why the name change? Hancock in 1851 but Hancock Minear at marriage.
Can anyone offer an explanation to this puzzle?

Just a thought - what happened to Jane? Did she marry?
My reasoning - did Jane marry Mr Hancock, and therefore Mary took his name at some stage? :-\
Can't see a suitable connection 1837-1853 :-\

Jane was nee Guy.
Her husband William Minear/Manear died 1832.
I do not think she remarried as tracked her on Census through 1871. She died 1873 aged 74. :-\

My thoughts:
A Mr Hancock was the father of Mary - it was quite common for children to be given an extra middle name of their father's surname.
Perhaps there are Bastardy Orders available?
Or Jane admitted, before a church official, the name of the "guilty" party?
On the Isle of Man at least, this was known as a Presentment for Fornication ;)
This was in the Anglican Church, and so probably happened in other diocese?

I thought that a Hancock might be the father as given that as middle name on baptism.
I cannot see the child Mary in 1841. That might give a clue.
By 1851 she has become Mary M Hancock. :-\
