Post by: enzfan on Sunday 17 December 17 19:26 GMT (UK)
Hello

I am looking for a marriage between William GODFREY (born Devon) and Mary Peck FOORD (born Hampshire). Unable to find a marriage record in England

First child - William Thomas Foord GODFREY born in Jersey 1844, baptised St Helier.

Thanks

This is odd because of the name combination - there is this marriage but not to a William Godfrey

Margaret Peck Foord
Age:   26 born 1816
Marriage Date:   4 Jul 1842
St Helier, Jersey

Father:   William Foord
Spouse:   George Stockman

Spouses father John Stockman

Her place of birth was Southsea Hampshire and his was Exmouth Devon.

The actual image is on Ancestry

Hello

Very interesting!

Can you check for a subsequent marriage to William Godfrey please. She is with him in London in 1851

Her age also weird - actually born about 1809. Father correct and she is with her parents in 1841

So it looks as if she married 3 times?

I can't find what should be a Stockman/Godfrey marriage between 1842 and 1861.

Yes it looks like 3 times. Was George Stockman a Tailor?

If he was then he is in the 1841 census living in St Helier and then pops up married to a Margaret in Portsea, Hampshire in 1851

I can't see one, and divorce wasn't that common then. I wonder if they just went their separate ways and Mary took William Godfrey's name without marrying him?

Here's the daughter's birth, so the marriage didn't last long.

Births Dec 1846

Godfrey    Sarah Ann Mirtle Foord
Alverstoke    7   19

Yes I think you might be right about them going their own separate ways. George must have liked older women - his next partner is 6 years older.

Many thanks for your help  ;)
