I would be very grateful if someone could help me find the birth, marriage and death certificates for my gg grandmother Mary Jane Craig. I know from the 1901 and 1911 Belfast census that she was born about 1840 in Ballymena.
I found information from her daughter Hannah's marriage certificate to John Gordon about 1894 in Belfast, that she married John Craig, so Craig may not be her maiden name. She married John Craig (nailer) around 1870.
I found a Joseph Craig (Nailer) living in Robert street Ballymena in the 1901 census who may be a relative. I think he was in the Army Service corp in 1888 and was a deserter. Mary Jane was still living in Everton Street in 1918 according to the Belfast street directory but I can't find a death record or a grave for her.
Any help would be much appreciated

Thank you Hallmark. I have that record and tried to follow her through the street directories as well. Can't find any record on Irish Genealogy which is odd as I found records for the rest of the family on there.

Civil registration of births started in 1864 so there will be no birth certificate for Mary Jane (and at this point you aren't even sure of her maiden name).
Best to start and work back through available records. Finding daughter's birth certificate should give names of both parents.

Thanks so much Achadowey. I know Mary Jane had 3 children with 2 living on the 1911 census so the first Hannah could have died in childhood. There was another child Maggie who was blind and born after Hannah. I think the Robert street births must be right. Saw a John Craig Robert Street in the Griffith valuations so maybe the grandfather John was put down as father if all births were illegitimate.

Yes, the marriage cert for Hannah and John is correct. Thanks for that.Don't know if John was deceased or not.

A Maggie Craig around the right age buried Dundonald but may be a co-incidence based on others in plot-

Wonder if this could be your Mary Jane Craig & daughter Maggie bried with a Robert Craig?

Interesting that Mary Jane lived in 47.2 Everton street in 1901 and Hannah lived in 47.1. I wonder if the house was split in two. Very small houses if they were. She was cited as widow in 1901 so John mist have died before that (if he was her husband)

My Maggie Craig died on 21 Dec 1917 in Everton Street according to Irish genealogy. That's the difficulty with so many Maggies and Craig. Thanks for looking that up anyway.

It's entirely probably (based on evidence so far) that Mary Jane Craig never married. Wonder if Jane Craig was her mother?

Yes, of course. I know very little about Mary Jane but I did think Jane might have been her mother. Hannah died of TB around 1905 not long after giving birth to a wee John Gordon who also died in infancy. John Gordon senior died in 1907 of typhoid and his brother Samuel was witness to the death. Hannah and John has 5 children but only three survived to adulthood. Two Marias died in childhood. The first born in 1896 and died aged 6 of measles. She is buried in Shankill old graveyard and there is a stone erected for her by John saying "Wee Ria". I'm not sure about the second Maria. Polly born 1896 married William Macauley, Caroline my grandmother born 1898 was said to have married Thomas Killow but I doubt it and Maggie born 1901 married Francis Adams.

That's sad. I wonder if folk changed religion. I think he never married. Interesting that he was also a nailer. Was that a common job?
