Hi Bruce ,
I wonder if this would be better placed on the Lanarkshire board for now to see if we can find more information on the son John and his parents :-\ (Posted on Armed Forces board).
I can't make out Archibald's wife's maiden name Annie ?
From the 1881 Census(if I have the correct person) John Campbell age 36 , life insurance agent , born Glasgow Lanark , living with family in Dundee.
Son Archibald Campbell born 18th June 1881 St Clement Dundee , Parents John Campbell and Mary Campbell Stark.

There's an Archibald Campbell appearing in the 1851 census in Glasgow College who may be your man:
90 Havannah St, Glasgow
Daniel Campbell, head, 60, warper, Whithorn, Wigtownshire
Mary Campbell, wife, 60, Greenock Renfrewshire
Archibald Campbell, son, 29, Chelsea Pensioner, Glasgow, Lanarkshire
This may be the same Archibald Campbell who was born to Daniel Campbell and Mary McNiven on 20 Nov 1820 (baptised 3 Dec 1820) in Glasgow Gorbals. And also may be the same Archibald Campbell, listed in the Chelsea Pensioner Soldier's Service Records listing: regimental number 2282, 26th Regiment of Foot, b. abt 1821, Glasgow, Lanarkshire; service dates: 1840 - 1849.
Unfortunately, I can't find any trace of him after 1851... :(

Hi Ruth
Where did you find the census return for 1851 as I cannot seem to find it on scotlandspeople I have tried every permutation that I can think of and keep getting "Sorry, there are no results for your search.
Please refine your search, or alternatively you can start a new search"

I can't find it on SP either, but it's on FreeCEN - Danl Campbell, 60; Mary Campbell, 60; Archd Campbell, 29. 644/11/21.
If I were you I would ask SP why you can't find it on the SP system.
The next door neighbour is listed on FreeCEN as Cecila (not Cecilia) Courtney, 21. I can't find her in the SP index either.

I can't find Archibald either on SP - but father Daniel seems to be there - although he's been indexed as Davd Campbell (which is how he's indexed on Ancestry too) ref from SP is 644/1 206/21.

Hi All
Reply from scotlandspeople.
Dear Bruce,
Thank you for your contacting ScotlandsPeople.
I did manage to find the entry but Daniel is shortened to Danl on the record but they have indexed it under Davd. See attached image, CAMPBELL DAVD 60 M 644-01 206- 021 Glasgow
We will endeavour to rectify the entry as soon as we are able, although for technical reasons it may be some time before any changes made to the database here at New Register House are reflected on the website itself. In the meantime and thank you for letting us know.
Kind regards,
Karen

Just out of curiosity, how was Archibald indexed?
