Title: Birth and parents sought of Michael WALSH, married to Mary Bergin
Post by: NicolaasMars on Thursday 21 December 17 12:36 GMT (UK)
Michael Walsh and Mary Bergin marry on 14 Feb 1900 in the RC Chapel of Castlecomer, Co. Kilkenny. He is a farmer, and his father's name is also given as Michael in the marriage record.

I find the couple in the census of 1901 in Loughill, Attanagh, Kilkenny, with his unmarried brother William, aged 30, living with them. In 1911 the still live in Loughill, and the brother, aged 40, is still with them.  They then have 6 children (including of course one Michael).

Michael Walsh gives his age as 38 in 1901, and 53 in 1911! I have been unsuccesful in finding his birth or baptism, or the name of his mother. (His wife Mary Bergin was born on 12 July 1875 in Castlecomer. Her age of 25 in 1901, and 34 in 1911, is more reasonable.)

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Could this be William’s birth?

Yes, that could certainly be brother William's birth, especially if "Lowhill" and "Loughill" could refer to the same townland.

If the age given in the census by Michael is roughly right, he could have been born before the start of the civil registration.

Indexes show several children born 1860- 1869 to Michael Walsh and Bridget Brennan. Unfortunately though no Michael  :-\. Parish is here.

And with the townland of Lowhill again! Yes, that must be him.

Thank you all very much for this nice Christmas present.

Merry Christmas!

I do not seem to find the marriage of the parents Michael Walsh and Bridget Brenan in the same church where you find the baptism of their son Michael. Any suggestions where I could look?

Good find. Witnesses are Thomas Walsh & Rosanna Brennan who I suggest are siblings of the groom & bride. This may in due course help identify their families.

ADDED: Doesn't help your query but it looks from familysearch that Rose/Rosanna married Michael Boyce with children baptised 1864 - 1876.
