Title: What did a Factor do?
Post by: amh155 on Saturday 23 December 17 01:29 GMT (UK)
I have Ambrose Hall listed as a factor in the City of London in the 1700s, later a merchant, but can't find what he actually did. Any ideas greatly appreciated.

Search RootsChat for factor and you will see many post explaining. It is always a good thing to search RootsChat as most questions about occupations have been asked before.

A Factor is
One who buys and sells for another person; a mercantile agent; a commission merchant. Also in comb., as coal-, corn-, cotton-, produce-, wool-, etc. factor. A factor is distinguished from an ordinary agent or broker, in having actual possession of the goods he deals in, and trading in his own name (N.E.D.).  From the OED
