She is the eldest child - both parents bn Ireland. I wonder if she was born before the marriage :-\
Maybe not ::)

But check 1871 census RG 10 / 522 / 56 / 7 - a 21 year old Johanna Canty is still in Whitechapel with widowed mother Eliza :-\
Can she possibly have been enumerated twice in 1871 - once in London and once in Pontypool?

I think that Joanna is wrong.
There is another in Deptford 1851 worth looking at HO107 / 1585 f177 p28

Following up the name of the father on her marriage certificate I have found the family of a Dennis Donovan with wife Mary and daughter Joanna in the 1851 and 1861 censuses living in Trevethin.
1851 ref is HO 107/2449 f 131
1861 ref is Rg 9/4007 f 65
In both censuses Joanna is shown as born in Kent.

Following up Barbara F's find, here's an interesting possible marriage: :-\
Pontypool, 2nd quarter 1850
Dennis Donovan + on the same page Mary Donovan
-
I have also looked at the children of Dennis and Mary and these indicate a maiden name of Donovan.
So maybe Mary Donovan had a relationship with a Mr Canty before her marriage to Dennis?
I think I would get the birth certificate for Joanna and probably the marriage certificate for Dennis and Mary next.
