Title: 1955 to 1959 Cyprus Veterans
Post by: Les Smith on Thursday 28 December 17 18:41 GMT (UK)
I would like to hear from any 1955 to 1959 Cyprus Veterans or the relatives of any of the 371 British servicemen who died out there. We now have a memorial in Kyrenia and one in The National Memorial Arboretum in Staffordshire. Very few of the relatives of the 371 are aware that they are entitled to receive The Elizabeth Cross. I have a website for Cyprus Veterans.
My e-mail address is cyprusveterans@gmail.com

Good morning,

I went to Cyprus in 74, when the Turks invaded, with the UN. Our Squadron was based in Limassol initially then Nicosia. There was still a lot of distrust for British troops even then and we still had trouble from the EOKA B.

We had 3 troops in OPs for a week at a time on rotation. The other 3 did mobile patrols, 1 day on, 1 day on standby, 1 day off. On standby we could go out but had to go in uniform in our vehs. Our troop used to go to RAF Akrotiri to the bay at the end of the runway. We laid on the sand and watched the Vulcans taking off right over us, amazing sight.

A bit different from when you were all there but it was a lovely place to see.

Brings back memories :)
Hubby was RAF at Akrotiri and I worked at Epi, lived in Limassol, good times spoilt by the invasion but it made life interesting

Hi..    it certainly was an interesting time in Cyprus, I was there in 1955/7 with 2Batt Green Howards stationed in Dhekelia near Larnaca, We did many patrols in Paphos/ Kyrenia and the troodos Mountains chasing after Col Grivas and his Eoka terrorists.....
Great Holiday place to Visit now.

This pic on the QARANC site is described as the childrens ward, Nicosia BMH.  I was too young to remember it! (my sister born Jun 1957, me May 1958)
