Title: Is Yealm still a place?
Post by: teach3r on Tuesday 02 January 18 18:47 GMT (UK)
Good evening and thank you in advance for any help that can be given.

Under where born on an 1851 census I have Devon, Yealm; however, on looking on Google I can only find a river of this name rather than a place.  Could someone tell me more about this place name please or have I misread it?

Thank you,

Nic

According to what I can find on the Genuki Devon pages there is no mention of a place called Yealm. There is a Yealmpton which includes the hamlet of Yealm Bridge. Perhaps it is just an abbreviation.

I lived down there for 20+ years and the only one I knew of was Yealmpton. We used to go up that way quite often.

Thanks Emeltom and Gadget - I think it must be Yealmpton as you suggest.
