Title: Jane Claringbould who were her parents?
Post by: panda40 on Thursday 04 January 18 18:29 GMT (UK)
Good evening chatters
I have Jane Claringbould sometimes also spelt Claringbold who was born around 1826. Her baptism was in Ringwold 9/7/1826 and can be found on findmypast. It gives her parents as William and Jane Claringbould. William is recorded as a miller. The only record of Jane with her father I have found so far is the 1841 census 494/7/31/17 living in Dover Kent. There are other siblings on the 1841census but I have not been able to find their baptisms yet. Also a 50 year old Elisabeth with the family.
Jane married Walter Jones in 1844.
I’m trying to confirm which William Claringbold married which Jane. As usual the trees on ancestry through more spanners in the works than solve problems. I need a fresh set of eyes to help confirm her parents.
Thanks in advance for your help.
Regards panda

Hello Panda
One possible: married at St Leonard's Chuch, Deal 4/12/1821 William Barker Claringbould of St Mary, Dover (no occupation given) to Jane Verrier of Deal. witnesses were John Claringbould, Richard Verrier, Sara Ann Verrier and Ann Burgess.
Just a shot in the dark.

Kind Regards
AJ

The William Claringbould 1825 marriage to Jane Wraith also looks likely, but we need a signature from your Jane’s father to compare.

The Jane Wraith mar.1825 was originally Jane Goodburn who married Edward Wraith a mariner in Folkestone 1818.   They had a daughter, Mary, in 1819.  This Mary Wraith married Stephen Williams in Dover in 1838.  One of the witnsses was William Claringbould.  But was he yours..

A couple more baptisms for William and Jane in Ringwould were:

William 1827  father a miller
Sarah Ann  1832   father a labourer

Thanks for the input my gut instinct is to go with the marriage of William Claringbould in Deal as it is closer than Folkestone to where his family were baptised. I have been trying to find out more about the Elizabeth Claringbould shown on the 1841 census as a possible sister to help clarify which William is the correct one. Has anyone been able to link these two people yet?

Do you have William in the 1851 Census?

Hi Trish at the moment I have not found a 1851 census record that I can match with the family. If it is William Barber Claringbold he remarried in 1828 to a Sarah Mead so he should appear with her. I have not been able to find the child Susanna Aged 8 in the 1841 census either. Her older sister Catherine is working as a servant in 1851 and place of birth is given as Ringwould Kent.

Yes I found the same info on Catherine, no Susanna;

Had typed this up before your reply came in so will add it even though you have some of it;

16 July 1832, St Alfege, Greenwich
William CLARINGBULL to Elizabeth JENKINS
Both widowed
Witnesses, Charles Crane, Charlotte Sedgewick

May just be a red herring.

And to throw another spanner in the works;
A William Barker* Claringbould, Widower, married Sarah Read, Single,18 Jun 1828 Dover.

Thanks Trish the problem is there are too many variables and no positives that I can find to make the connections needed.

I agree.

I can find William 1828 in 1861 Census but not 1851.

Sorry, logging out, off to bed :)

I don’t know how many William Barber Claringboulds there could be.  Maybe a family name.   But one was a victim at the Old Bailey in 1833.  He lived in Camden.

If William Barber Claringbould is he one you are looking for there is a snippet off the net relating to his wife, Jane. William was born 4 May1794 in Dover and died 1865 in Shoreditch.
Jane Verrier was born in 1794 to Richard and Mary (nee Bennett) Verrier and had 11 siblings. I cannot find a record of her baptism in Deal or Walmer.

As Lily M says, a William Barber Claringbould was a witness/victim in a case at the Old Bailey in 1833 involving an amount of stolen clothing. At the time he lived in Camden and could well have stayed in London as he died in Shoreditch.

Thanks for your input AJ I’m following this William Claringbould to see if I can find evidence to confirm or remove him from the tree and then I will follow the other one and do the same. Hopefully by doing this will help me focus on the one trail and not get muddled up between the two.
