Title: Help understanding a medal roll entry, please
Post by: SmallTownGirl on Friday 05 January 18 12:21 GMT (UK)
Hi peeps

Using this chap as an example - and say that there are no other records available - does the record show that he first served in the 11th Bn and then the 7th Bn, or was he first in the 7th and then in the 11th?

Thanks in advance.

In the British War and Victory medal rolls, the top one is the first battalion he served overseas with, the second the last battalion (overseas).  Same goes for a man who serves in different regiments, the one he finishes with is the roll he is entered on with the last battalion/regiment entered last,  That said, clerks didn't always get it right so beware of the odd anomaly.

With the 1914 Star and 1914/1915 Star rolls. the deal is different.  There he is entered on the roll of the regiment with which he earned the medal.

It would be uncommon for there not to be an associated medal card
