Kilmarnock, Ayrshire, in 1850. They are two of the 9 children of Jeremiah FARRELL and Ann MUIR, who were married at St Quivox, Ayrshire, in 1829. I have the details of the other 7 children, the youngest of whom is my great grandfather.
I have census information for James, in 1841, and 1851, and then nothing. I have traced the story of a James FARRELL who emigrated to the USA in 1854, and died in New Haven, Connecticut in the 1890s, but there is nothing, apart from his age, to link him to my James. A query on the American Rootschat board was unsuccessful.
I have Mary in censuses up to 1881, but after that, nothing; she may have died, married or emigrated.
Is anyone else here researching this family?

Have you checked the death on Scotlands People for Mary Farralls age 30 1881 Kilmarnock Ayr
Ref 597/369 ...
Is this her in the 1881 Census transcribed as Ferrol
Address 2.London Road Kilmarnock
Hugh Ferrol age 26 Cab Driver
Mary Ferrol age 26 wife
Christina Ferrol age 4 daughter
Hugh Ferrol age 2
Jeremiah Ferrol age 1
Mary Ferrol age 29 sister (power loom worker )
James Ferrol age 6 Nephew
Would I be right in saying James Ferral is the son of Mary
Birth James Farrell 31/December 1874 Kilmarnock Ayr
Mother Mary Farrell
/ 1891 census there is a James Farrell in Paisley with his Uncle Jeremiah /?

Thank you. Rosie, for your suggestions - you are 100% right!
The death you suggested is correct. The 1881 census is indeed Mary, with my great grandfather, Hugh. James is her son - I bought the birth to confirm. The James living with Jeremiah in 1891 is most likely Mary's son.
John.
Note - census date corrected.

Pleased it was the right one for you :)

It looks like Jeremiah, uncle of James in 1891, left his estate to James when he died in 1928. Jeremiah and his wife don't appear to have had children .

Yes seen the probate record not having much luck with James Farrell b 1830 there are numerous James Farrells in USA ??? ...lots of them born Ireland ...Maybe your James died before the 1855 Statutory Records

Thanks for your efforts, Rosie. As I said in my first post, there was a James FARRELL born Scotland, that I found in the United States. James and his wife Bridget had a daughter they named Ann, in Charlestown, New Hampshire in 1855. I also found a likely arrival for James and Bridget in New York, on the ship Ticonderoga in 1854. I found James with Bridget in 1860, in Enfield, Connecticut, and James in 1870 and 1880 with a wife called Johanna, in New Haven, New Haven, Connecticut. They don't appear in the 1900 census. Unfortunately, New Haven deaths don't appear to be easily found, for the 1880s and 1890s. I checked New Haven newspapers at the Library of Congress site, but found nothing useful for this James.
The records I have came from Family Search.
