I’m hoping someone can help me unpick the details behind this article and these unsavoury gentlemen.
https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/11830366 (https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/11830366)
George Cooper married Alice Rosetta Utting in 1884, but I can’t find his date of birth, date of death or anything besides his marriage and children to Alice.
I’m also unsure who Edward Utting is. Alice had two siblings with middle name of Edward - could it be one of them? Or is it my 2xgreat grandfather who also went by the name of Edmund Utting (b. 1845 in Norwich) and was jailed in Vic in 1877? I don’t think so as he had moved to Moonta/Yeltsa by then, married Grace Lugg Hooper and was having children.
If anyone can help with some biographical details about George and identify the right Edward, I’d appreciate it.
Many thanks in advance!

Their records are here. Edward was the son of Thomas, born Collingwood, 1862.

Blimey! What a no-good man Mr Utting seems to have been! He is a distant cousin, but assaulting women seems to have run in the Utting family unfortunately.
Strange that George Cooper has not left much of a trace and is, indeed, not showing up in the criminal register. I had forgotten about that collection, so thank you for the link.
Really appreciate the help so far. Thank you!

George COOPER is in the criminal register. Born 1830 I think.

Cando, the date of conviction for George in the criminal register is 1 day out and he was convicted for assaulting the policeman - not for stealing, and the date and place of birth seem wrong. Edward’s record has him being convicted on 2nd of October which matches the article.
The article describes them as young men and this George would be 53! And you have him being born in Tasmania from the marriage record.
Only the rough date and the name seem to match, IMO. What do you think?

I suggest you purchase George's marriage cert.
I transcribed George's place of birth from my resource. Of course one hopes that George was accurate with his information on the marriage cert.
