George Gage
Birth 1858 • Ormesby, Norfolk, England
I know his wifes name is Harriet, but I can't seem to find anything about her other than her first name. I would appreciate any help. It seems she was born 1856 in Yarmouth. They are on the 1881 census all nice an tidy. Other than that I am struggling.
Kind regards.
Yes, was a typo on the census date, thank you avm228

Did you mean the 1861 census, or is that a typo? They would both have been young children then.
Did they go on to have children? If so, have you searched those children's birth registrations for Harriet's maiden name on the GRO website?
-
Perhaps you meant the 1881 census?
George Gage 22
Harriett 25

This website and its users never cease to amaze me, thank you all very much. I am still learning and much from here. Thank you all.
-
This looks like Emily's baptism:
14 March 1879, Gt Yarmouth parish church
Emily Selina, born 7 Feb 1879, dau of Harriet Johnson of Yarmouth.
-
You may not know but the new GRO index gives mothers maiden surnames for births before 1916 ;)

Always a good place to start if you have census showing children

6 Sep 1879
April, not September, avm! Looks a bit like Sepr or Sept on the original. But registered in the June qtr.

Oops - quite right! Thanks, I will correct that.

I managed to find the marriage certificate, the family is going berserk ;-D thank you

Did George also die as Gedge?
Death, Jun qtr 1888 Yarmouth vol 4b p16
George Gedge, aged 30

Harriett GEDGE (wid, 34), appears in Yarmouth in 1891 with children Emily 12, George 11, Walter 6.
RG12/1501/107/10.
-
I think a local official spelt the name differntly from todays "Gage"
-
It's apparently not an idiosyncrasy of a single local official.
Gedge is the spelling on the 1879 marriage, and then at least:
Walter's birth registration (1886)
George's death registration (1888)
Censuses 1891 onwards
Walter's death registration (1960)
-
George Gedge was baptized at Ormsby on 1 November 1857 son of William and Maria Gedge, father occupation labourer.
There is a marriage of a William Geadge to Maria Hall at Little Ellingham on 5 April 1851, his father is Thomas King, gardener and her father Thomas Hall, labourer, witnesses Eliza Rider and John Spurgeon
William may have been base born as he appears to have his mothers maiden name
ADDED on the marriage record William is a labourer and Maria is a servant
-
William Gedge was baptized at Ormsby 25 January 1831 son of Mary Ann Gedge.
So at least when he married Maria he knew his fathers name.
