Title: George Guy, Soldier in Maidstone 1851
Post by: Irene B on Monday 08 January 18 14:07 GMT (UK)
I have a marriage certificate dated 17 Sept 1851, George Guy, Bachelor, 26, Soldier  address is Barracks Sandling Road, Maidstone, his father is William Guy also a soldier.

His wife Victoria Frances Albo gave birth to their son George Augustus Guy in St Malo, France in Augus 1852.  On 1851 census she was living with her family in St Helier, Jersey and she was there as a widow with her son in 1861.

George Guy is still a mystery, which regiments were in Maidston in Sep 1851 and were any of them sent to France?

A likely possibility.

In 1841 in St. Helier there is a George GUY with father Willam who was an Army pensioner. At the time George was an apprentice shoemaker.

William Guy was from Ringwood in Hampshire, his service Records from the 23rd Regiment of Foot are on Ancestry and   Findmypast, both have incorrectly transcribed his place of birth as Kingwood.

He served in America, France, Portugal and Gibraltar.

That is same family as I found in 1841, I also found them in 1851 but had not found Bridget in the 1861. Thanks to suz I have now found her transcribed as Grey in 1861, the address is 9 Chevalier Road.

The military side is yielding less than the family side so far.  Maidstone in the 1850s had representatives of a multitude of regiments - it was the cavalry depot for 5 cavalry regiments, the horse depot for the Royal Artillery and there were a number of smaller units there also.  Military records come up with the artilleryman lizdb found but clearly not him.  There is a 9th Lancer who at the time of the 1851 index was stationed in Umballa India although the depot of the 9th Lancers was at Maidstone.
From what folk have found already, I'd say that the Jersey connection would be family rather than military.  Although there were two regiments of foot stationed in the Channel Islands I find no connection with Maidstone.  I'd suggest also that St Malo is also not military related but rather that she was on her way to or from Jersey via France when the baby appeared.

The 9th Lancer may be worth chasing up but one would need to look at the muster books at Kew with no guarantee they would tell us anything.

Needle in haystack?

Thank you all, what a wonderful response.  The Jersey connection does seem the most likely.

I have not been able to locate a baptism for William in Ringwood, although there a numer of Guys in and around Ringwood and Harbridge  including several Williams with the wrong birth years.

Being on the Hampshire border with Dorset, there may be a connection with the Dorset Guys.
