Title: Charitable Aid Entry for Canterbury
Post by: mwkelly on Tuesday 09 January 18 08:48 GMT (UK)
Looking for information on
Marion Newbegin applying for charitble aid in Wainui Akaroa around c1867/68

her husband was a shipwright John Newbegin and died of consumption in 1867, they together had three children born on Banks Peninsula. Her last child was just a baby at the time.

Thank you
Murray

Hi Murray

The newspapers (PapersPast) are usually a good "first port of call" as often funds were collected or monies raised by various means, in support of young widows with families - and the newspapers generally reported such causes.

You may have already looked of course ?  I did too, but with no luck whatsoever.  :(

Next would be a check of records held at Archives New Zealand > using say, the search term "charitable aid".     You would need to "weed out" the Canterbury (Christchurch) files and find the relevant years.

Hi again Murray

When I went searching under the name of "NEWBEGIN" I found that there were other spellings.

Marion's death notices in 1919  ....
http://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/newspapers/AMBPA19191114.2.3

http://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/newspapers/TS19191113.2.2.3

....   led to finding her re-marriage under the spelling "NEWBIGGEN" when she wed Samuel SADLER in 1875.
You probably already have this information  ??
But I'll add a few notes as well in case it's of help.

Samuel SADLER - (1819-1896) :

Not sure when he arrived in Canterbury but he had a freehold property at Wainui from at least March 1861.   [Samuel Turner SADLER - baptised at Goadby-Marwood, Leicestershire on 11 October 1819 - s/o James (a farmer) and Maria SADLER. ]   Couldn't find records to show that he'd been previously married or had children.

In the event you don't find evidence of a charitable grant being made to Marion, it's worth considering that she may simply just have been supported by members of her community who gave her paid work.    Mr SADLER her eventual husband, might also have been an early benefactor ?
*   Did she ... or her late husband,  have family in NZ  ??

In case it's of interest and you don't already have it, here is a link to Samuel SADLER's Probate file :
