that's very interesting thank you.
will any records exist where I can track back to find johns birth records in Dublin. or on his fathers marriage.
read that a lot has been destroyed by fire 1941 ?
I cannot find any search finding either johns birth "he never married" or his father Thomas.
john in later life lived with his brother james greer and it from here that I found on james birth certificate that gives his father as Thomas greer occupation watchmaker
any information would be much appreciated.thanks again

Assuming St.George parish is a COI, there are records here
https://churchrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/location.jsp?diocese=DUBLIN+%28COI%29
But I don't see your family.
Or it could refer to a Civil Parish, there are 2 Civil Parishes called St.George in County/City Dublin.
BTW the fire was 1922
https://www.irish-genealogy-toolkit.com/irish-records-burned.html
Lost most of 4 Census, Anglican parish records, Wills, (most transcripts survived), Court documents.

The original parish records of St. George's dating from 1794 are held at the Representative Church Body Library

As the family don't appear to be in St.George COI link in Reply#5
Perhaps they are in St.George CE

Just looking at that colour again. St George CE is grey so the register was lost in the 1922 fire.
-
the C.E. stands for chapel of ease, the main parish records for St. Georges Church of Ireland survive and are on IrishGenealogy. - sorry - missed previous reply @ 15:47
Any baptisms in the CE should have been recorded in the main register
-
thank you again
looks like I have come to the end of possible searches for them both
-
I have asked before, but since the father may have been military, did you ever look at the military birth index?

It is in the first post you made!!

have had a quick look on find my past without opening the document.
there was a john greer birth Woolwich 1813
now this is a coincidence because this where his brother james was born and where they both appear in later census returns.
yet john gives his birth has Dublin on the 1851 census
any ideas on this ? !
thanks
-
I'd check Woolwich.

will do cheers
