Title: Emily Delly/Turner Sutton-at-Hone
Post by: reynolds_1979 on Tuesday 09 January 18 23:18 GMT (UK)
I have a brick wall of sorts. I am hoping someone may be able to help with it.

Henry Hall Reynolds b 1837 to parents John Reynolds and Cordelia Hall.

Marriage to Emily Delly 19 Dec 1874 in Crayford after Banns.

She is recorded as being 20 years old making her birth year 1854/55. Her father is Robert Delly Labourer.

I cannot find anyone called Emily Delly with a father Robert that would fit with this person who married Henry Hall Reynolds.

I have my suspicions as to what is going on here but I wanted to see if anyone else could find anything before going into detail about those.

I would really appreciate any help

Philippe

Welcome to Rootschat

I can't find any Reynolds/Delly births on GRO online.  Did they have any children?

No marriage for a Robert Delly

No birthplace given for either Emily or Henry - can you advise please

Would have helped if you had included that children's birth registrations show her maiden name as Turner

1891 census shows her born Dartford

Is this the family you refer to in 1881  :-\

Emily age 26 born Swanley

Who were the witnesses to the marriage and what was her fathers occupation

Hi, yes that would be the correct family. The problem I have always had is that Emily Delly doesn't seem to exist and the Emily that I have found to be the best candidate was Emily Turner b Swanley 12/08/1854.

The marriage record for Henry Reynolds and Emily Delly shows her father, Robert's occupation as labourer. The witnesses are James Reynolds and Mark Clement. Mark Clement signs 3 of the 4 marriages that appear on the image of the record on Ancestry.

My theory has always been that because Emily was 17 years younger than Henry Reynolds that there may have been family resistance to the marriage. Which is why she doesn't get married in her parish, which was the normal procedure for the time and why she changes her's and her father's name. I wanted to see whether, in others opinions, was a legitimate theory, even though the evidence is circumstantial.

On the 1939 register Emily Reynolds is living with her daughter Maud Alice Armstrong on Lowfield street, where she has lived all her married life, and her date of birth is the 12/08/1854 matching that of Emily Turner from Swanley.

If as you say the documentation confirms the birth dates are the same I would agree they are the same person.  She does at least give mmn as Turner on the childrens birth registrations as Carole stated.  :)

Thanks. I think I just needed a second opinion that I wasn't barking up the completely wrong proverbial tree.
