Title: William Kee born 1834 in Isle of Man??
Post by: westcoastie on Thursday 11 January 18 21:24 GMT (UK)
Looking for parents of William Kee to further my tree.  ;D

What I know about him is that he was born 1834 in Douglas, Middle, Isle of Man. He married Sarah Jane Kerr in Douglas, Middle, Isle of Man, in July 1855. He died in 1875 in Victoria, Australia.

Thanks!!

Found a baptism for a Sarah Jane Kerr in Braddan, 27 May 1838.
Parents Will Kerr (butcher) and Ann Cowley.

Douglas was split between Braddan parish and Onchan parish, before the creation of a parish in Douglas.

I'm not seeing a baptism for a William Kee; neither can I see him on any census?
The marriage is also eluding me?

Do you have any proof for the birth, baptism or marriage of William Kee?

Just found a tree online that has William’s mother as 119 years old when she gave birth to him.  ::)

KGarrad: That is interesting because I have that she was born about 1836 in Berwick, Stirlingshire, Scotland, died 1886 in Walhalla, Victoria, Australia and that her parents are William Kerr and Jane Hood. I also think she remarried an Oliver. Maybe that's incorrect though?

Yeah! Not much comes up for William Kee. It's like he's a ghost.
I actually think the last name could be Key. I just saw a record of a William Key immigrating to Victoria, Australia. Unfortunately, it's one of those things where you have to pay to see the whole thing.
It's possible that his birth record could have been mistranscribed as Kay.
I don't know how I would ever narrow it down to the right one though because there are a lot of results.

Hmmm?
Berwick isn't in Stirlingshire? :-\ It used to be in Berwickshire, but is now English and in Northumberland.
There is a North Berwick, but that's in East Lothian (used to be Haddingtonshire).

I tried spelling variations of Kee, but still can't find a baptism, or a census entry?

Where did your information come from?

I think it may be North Berwick.
I have a great aunt who does genealogy and she has down that William (born 1837
Douglas , Isle Of Man) and Jane (born Jan 1837 Berwick, Scotland) married 1857 at Isle of Man. And that after William died 31 Mar 1875 in Gipsland, Victoria, Australia, she remarried a John Oliver in the same year. She died 8 Sep 1886 in Walhalla, Baw Baw Shire, Victoria, Australia apparently.
I've also got info from various websites like Ancestry which show possible records. I know it's not ideal to get stuff from other trees but I haven't been able to find any records for them on FamilySearch. I'm fairly new to genealogy.  :)

Manx records from around that time should be available on:
1) www.iMuseum.im The Manx Museum website
2) FamilySearch.org
3) Ancestry

I can find absolutely no mention of a marriage for William Kee or Key on any of those sites?
There is a baptism for a William Key, in Patrick, 26 May 1833?
Parents William Key and Catherine Karran.

St Matthews was, and is, located on North Quay in Douglas.
The whole area was a maze of alleys and small streets.
Not for nothing is a new restaurant there called "The Barbary Coast"! ;D

That's a good find, by the way, and may well be your man :D

your suggested Wm was the 2nd son of a successful [house]painter on North Quay
 - however he is missing from 1851 + 1861 censuses but I can't see any burial
- tho the parents of illegitimate children should be presented for fornication (and were in the more rural parishes) by this period Braddan wch included Douglas no longer bothered
you need to find the marriage record Kerr is a fairly unusual name on Island wch should name his father
(Quay is a possible alternative spelling)
