Looking for Henrietta's parents. She married John Nicholson. Her last name may be Dunn or Dow. She was born 1800 in Newcastle Upon Tyne, Northumberland, England and died there in 1880.
Thanks!

Perhaps this is relevant?
Marriage, All Saints, Newcastle
27 Feb 1837
John Nicholson to Henrietta Tempest
-
Perhaps then the older children were from previous marriages?
Birth registrations in Newcastle on Tyne district:
Jun qtr 1838: Jane Nicholson mmn Tempist
Sep qtr 1840: Elizabeth Nicholson mmn Dowe
-
Her previous marriage:
All Saints, Newcastle
8 June 1819
William Tempest to Henrietta Dow

Radcliff: Sorry, I don't know
avm228: Yes! I believe both of those censuses are the right family. Their daughter Jane that's listed is my gr-gr-gr grandmother. I didn't know she was a dressmaker. At 13 too, so cool!
As for, Henrietta, being married before to a Tempest, I have no knowledge of that! :o

I was a little confused by this. Do you think they just put her past married name for Jane, then?
If this is the case and John married Henrietta in 1837, then I guess the older kids probably were from a previous marriage.
Thank you SO much, avm228!
I had no idea of all this! But it didn't mention who her parents were on her marriage cert. to William Tempest or to John Nicholson??

Yes, I think they probably mistakenly gave Henrietta's previous married name rather than her maiden name on Jane's birth registration.
You ask about marriage certificates, but these dates are too early for marriage certificates. Civil registration was introduced on 1 July 1837, which was after Henrietta's second marriage.
So you are reliant on parish records, which will not generally speaking name the parents of those getiing married (there are exceptions to this rule).
You can see for yourself on FreeREG a transcription of the Bishop's Transcript for the 1819 marriage of William Tempest and Henrietta Dow. They were both of the parish of All Saints at the time of the marriage, which was after banns. Witnesses were John Nixon and John Thompson.

FreeREG also has a transcribed entry for the 1837 marriage of John Nicholson and Henrietta Tempest.
Witnesses were Matthew Westerby and Jos Pearson.

There are relevant Newcastle baptisms too on FreeREG: It looks as though Henrietta must have been in a reasonably advanced stage of pregnancy on her first marriage in June 1819, as her first child was baptised only 2 months later.
09 Aug 1819: William Tempest, son of William (a keelman) and Henrietta, of Sandgate*
22 Aug 1824: Thomas Tempest, son of William (a keelman) and Henrietta, of Sandgate
04 Sep 1827: William Tempest, son of William (a keelman) and Henrietta, of Sandgate
17 Aug 1830: Alexander Tempest, son of William (a waterman) and Henrietta, of Sandgate
*This first baby was baptised at the Lying-In Hospital, suggesting that it was done urgently after his birth because he wasn't expected to live.

avm228: All very interesting insights. Is there a way we can know if this William Tempest died or if she just left him? Thanks for all your help.
Millmoor: I think you may have actually found her parents! It seems likely. I wish I could know for sure. Thanks!
