Hi
This man married a Mary Ann Newman in Balsham in 1813 and had a number of children in that village from 1814 onwards, he appears in the 1841 Census with Mary Ann and 2 of his childre, but he does not appear in the 1851 census
Find my past have a death in 1859 in Balsham with n age, giving a DOB in 1789, which coincided with a birth of a James Ansell in Babraham. The only other James Ansell was born in 1797, which unless it was a late baptism would have made him 16 when he got married.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Just to save Rootschatters chasing a red herring - there is a baptism for James ANSELL son of John and Frances 1792 Chesterton, but he was buried in 1797 (as James ANCELL, child with parents John & Frances).

EDIT - Is your Mary Anne NEWMAN one of the two baptised in Balsham in 1788 and 1793?
Does the 1841 census give an age for James - I know it will be rounded, but it might point more to one of your possibles than the other.

Many thanks for that information, I am leaning towards the James baptised in Babraham, But if I could find him in the 1851 Census, 8 years before he died that would give me the confirmation I need

Does the 1841 census give an age for James - I know it will be rounded, but it might point more to one of your possibles than the other.
If the family on the 1841 census in Balsham is:
James age 50
Mary age 45
Emma age 15
Robert age 9
then allowing for rounding it would suggest a birth year of c1786-1791

You are a star, on wonder I couldnt find him, now the problem I have is that there does nor appear to be a birth in Balsham around 1790 so I wonder if his family moved there when he was young ?

I think the James ANSELL baptised in Babraham has to be your man.
familysearch have on the 1851 census in Chesterton, Cambs a James ANSELL age 55 born Sawston. FreeReg have transcripts of Sawston baptisms and there are no Ansells - so I think it most likely that this is the James who was baptised 1797 in Balsham.
What with errors in ages, errors in birthplace and variations of spelling of names it's a bloomin' wonder we find anybody!
