"Cemetery Records - Symonds Street
The Anglican Sexton's list has Morton Butler at Block E 128, Henry Furness at Block E 167 and Henry James Furness at Block E 168. According to the late 1950's tombstone transcriptions Morton Butler was the second son of Henry Furness who died 20 November 1869 aged 81 years and Henry James Furness died 3 January 1864 aged 16 months.
The St Pauls register has Henry Furness buried 22 November 1869 aged 31 years, a bank clerk of Khyber Pass, and Henry James Furness buried 4 January 1864 aged 16 months of Khyber Pass Road. The St Pauls register has a Norton Butler buried 9 December 1873 but he was aged 65 years, too old to be a 31 year old's son. The tombstone was broken or thrown down in October 1885, according to the New Zealand herald of 15/10/1985."

H Janette/ Minnie & Rosie
I was going through some old genealogy papers this morning and I found some results from some paid research I had done in New Zealand in 2000, which I had totally forgotten about.
Amongst these papers was the death certificate for Elizabeth Soall nee Clare showing that he married in London in 1838 (which I cannot find in FreeBMD. Her father was James a Farmer , but the mother was Elizabeth and not Fanny and she was born in Buckingham not Chesham.
The only wedding of an Elizabeth Clare in 1838 was in Westminster wger James Charles Soall was born, but he is not one of the grooms, there is another wedding in the Witney RD, but it only shows Elizabeth Clare and no groom.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Many thanks
David :D

Hi David
At the outset, you'd mentioned that you thought James SOALL and Elizabeth CLARE may have married on the ship en route to New Zealand. ???
* Was your reason for this that you'd not found a marriage in England, for them ??
Maybe the information provided at Elizabeth's death in 1877 was given by her husband ... though it might also have been supplied by another party ? Whatever, there's no guarantee it is totally correct - especially in respect of the date (year) of marriage ... or whether a marriage in fact took place between the two. Other resources need checking.
Can you tell us please >
* Were the daughters of the union born in England ?
* Do you have the name of ship on which James and Elizabeth came to New Zealand ?
Edit : ... oops I've just noticed at Reply # 26 that "J.C. SOALL is thought to have arrived in NZ c. 1842" so daughters probably NZ-born ?
[I've looked at England marriage records > numerous sources / and using variants of surnames >
but to date no luck with 1838 or any other years. ]

Hi Lu
They arrived on 1 of 2 ships that arrived in 1842 in Auckland one of them was the Jane Gifford, I have a picture which includes James taken in 1892 of those first settlers who arrived in 1842. Both the children were born in Auckland Louisa and Elizabth.
Like you I have scoured the marriage records in London and also the 841 Census but with no success, it was James who gave the information for the death certificate. I think ther might be a possibility that they were married on board the ship by the Captain, as when thy landed they went to work for him in his house in Khyber Pass Road.
Elizabeth Mary born 1843 and Louisa born 1844.
Kind Regards
David :D
