Title: Ada May Davis b Q2 1906 Brighton
Post by: Cockneyrebel on Monday 15 January 18 12:42 GMT (UK)
The above was the daughter of Frederick Davis 1861-1928 and Philadelphia nee Attrell 1870-1922.
I think she married Frank Richard Beard Q4 1926 Brighton and possibly had 4 children with him 1927-1941 in Brighton.
However, I can find no records of their passings or emigration?

Could this be her - slight change in second name and birth out by a couple of years, but right quarter?

Ada Mary Beard
Death Age:   68
Birth :   2 May 1908
Registration Date:   Sep 1976
Brighton East Sussex
Volume:   18
Page:   0390

ADDED: Cross checking with the 1939 I'm fairly sure that this is her and a mistake has been made with the year of birth. Remember that was only as good as the person registering it.

No sign yet of her husband, although I think he was born 1901 Brighton, so can't still be alive.

1929 electoral register has Frank Richard Beard and Ada May Beard at 10 Nelson Row, Brighton. Also Harriett Beard, who I think is his mother (and the householder).
In 1930 Harriet is still listed at number 10, but Ada May Beard is at number 16 Nelson Row (with a Harding family). Frank not listed with her.

In 1931 Ada May Beard is at 4 Claremont Place, along with Bertie Butcher and Nora Minnie Butcher.
A free address search of the 1939 Register seems to shows that the situation was unchanged.

If Frank was the son of Frank and Harriett, then there are a few mentions those two in the Brighton newspapers.

There's a death in Chelsea in 1971 of a Frank Beard born 1 July 1901.
Put that d-o-b into the 1939 search and it brings up a Frank R Beard in Porstmouth. No idea if this is Ada's husband.

possibly had 4 children with him 1927-1941 in Brighton.

Likely had one in 1927. Not sure about any others. They may have separated?

Ah, another Beard-Davis registered in 1929, then one in 1933.
A bit of a gap to the last one in 1941.

Which I think confirms the death I found is her.  ;)

I think you've sorted out Ada but her husband seems to be a mystery, the one in Portsmouth is recorded as single and doesn't seem to fit the bill?
btw jon where did you find the 1929 rolls and the newspapers-I can't locate them?

Ada is still claiming she is married in 1939, so either they have separated or he is already in the army.

So Frank must have still been around or the last two children weren't his!

Groom, if you look for the 1933 birth on FreeBMD, and then click on the page number, 281, you see something interesting!

Electorals and newspapers are from the website that has the 1939 Register.

That may mean that the 1939 Portsmouth Frank is him  :-\    I wonder where all the children are before the war.

They wouldn't show in the 1939 register would they as they could still be alive?

I see what you mean about the 1933 birth, John. Looks as if they did separate doesn't it?

Ah, another Beard-Davis registered in 1929, then one in 1933.

So we are looking for a 12 year old, a 10 year old and a 6 year old. I wouldn't think they were evacuated, as children were being evacuated to Brighton rather than away from there.

Going back to those electoral registers, Ada was living at the same address as a Harding family in 1930. George and Mary Ann Elizabeth, and also George Thomas.  I think GT was the son of the first two, and was born in 1907.

Yes I agree,never thought to look for a death,bless!

Perhaps that was the beginning of the end for them as a couple.

I'm not sure if I believe that the 1941 child is theirs (big gap),what does anyone else think?

Possibly not theirs but could be Ada's. Even if they were separated the child would have been a Beard as that was her name. It was also war time so she may have claimed her husband was away. The birth certificate could throw more light on it.

The 1935 death is definitely for the 1933 birth with two names as the death is registered under both names as well.

I may have found a marriage for the 1941 birth using the alternate name. It is in 1960 in Brighton.

Unusual grooms name so I was going to check and see if there were any children and what the mmm was.

Unfortunately in the middle of cooking the evening meal so can’t check now.

Yep kids born 1964,7 and 1970.

I didn't see an alternative name, but it's inline with the possible 1939 info that Jon found on #22.

If Ada used it for the 1933 birth, I thought the same might be true for 1941 given the 1939 register. No info on the person after the 1941 registration so thought she may have assumed the connected name.

Also found that the person in the marriage with the unusual surname, was born 1939-1941 according to the electoral roll.

Thank you all very much for your excellent detective work regarding Ada's family. I guess F R Beard will remain a mystery unless some future person sees this thread and can relate to him.

JonW found a possible death back on reply #6.
There's a death in Chelsea in 1971 of a Frank Beard born 1 July 1901.

But the actual date varies,so perhaps that's not the right one?
