Title: Looking for Francis SHELTON & wife Mary in 1851 & 1861 census
Post by: Westy11 on Tuesday 16 January 18 11:34 GMT (UK)
Francis SHELTON was initially married to Sarah STARBUCK.  A related post at http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=737599.0

Sarah is recorded in the 1841 census at Eaton, Melton Mowbray, Leicestershire, England.
HO107/587/17  9 p 12

She was buried 22 Sept 1842 at Eaton.

Francis married Mary SILLS 10 Jul 1843 at Eaton; Mary was a spinster and Francis a widower.  Mary was aged 29 [bap 24 Feb 1816 daughter of Robert SILLS and Elizabeth FARTHING].  Francis a labourer aged 39 with a possible birthdate of 1804.  No recording of his father.

I am unable to locate Francis and Mary  in the 1851 and 1861 census.

Francis children with Sarah all bap at Eaton:
Mary 1828
George 1830 bur 14 Mar 1830
George 1831
Ann 1833
Thomas 1835 bur 31 Mar 1835
Betsy 1840

Francis children with Mary at Eaton:
Robert 1844
Francis 1847
Ellen 1849

Fingers crossed.  I'm hoping the census clarifies Francis location of birth and further clarification of birth year as there are at least 2 possible parents for Francis being Thomas & Elizabeth or Francis & Elizabeth.

No wonder you can't find it on Ancestry -surname transcribed as Helbey/Helber in 1851

If trying to search a specific year with a reference number on Ancestry I would start here

https://search.ancestry.co.uk/search/group/ukicen
Select the year then put in a first name -Piece number /folio number /page number

I have added a link from familysearch to the 1861 entry reply (Mary is Shetton on F M P )

Hello Rosie,

Thanks so much.  You know I did actually find the Helbey/Helber in 1851 and discounted it.

I wonder where Francis is in 1861?  I located what I think is his death in 1865 but the dates are a bit shaky.

I can't see Francis in 1861 either.  The census for Mary does say she is married.

Agree.  There is a Francis SHELTON bur Eaton 18 Dec 1865 and it seems this is very probably the correct Francis indicating he is possibly in Eaton in 1861 but where???

A question and seeking your opinion.  I located a baptism for Francis at Eaton son of Thomas SHELTON and Elizabeth DUNSMORE bap 24 Jul 1803.

Thomas & Elizabeth married at Exton, Rutland 18 Oct 1802.

This couple seem to be to be the best 'fit'.

Your thoughts?

In 1841 there is a possibility for Francis's mother in Eaton, she is not born in County.  She is next to William Eaton and family who are next to Francis  & Sarah on the census.
I would think it is very likely that the Rutland marriage is them.

Thanks Rosie; I had set aside for further research the reference of Elizabeth in the 1841 census.  You make a good point.

Thanks

Banns say Thomas is of Exton & Elizabeth of Wikeham.

I don't know much about this area
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wycomb

There are a Thomas & Elizabeth in 1841 bn c1776 and c1771 who could fit that marriage
High Street, Scalford

Thanks Rosie.  Trouble is I cannot find a Wikeham ???

In 1841 census Eaton, Melton Mowbray, Leicestershire, England living with William SHELTON is Elizabeth SHELTON aged 60.  William and his family are recorded below Francis SHELTON and his family with his first wife.  Maybe this is a better fit ???

I think the 1841 you have quoted is probably Francis's mother but not the marriage you have.

The link I gave for 'Wycomb'  says it is in the parish of Scalford which would fit the Thomas & Elizabeth that I found in Scalford

Hello Rosie,

Had to tell you that I have located Francis in the 1861 census.  His name was transcribed as Shila and the location is North Church, Back Street, Eaton, Melton Mowbray, Leicestershire, England with elements of RG 9/2303/41Page 14

Thanks for letting me know.   :)  The writing on the census sheet is terrible, looks like they even left a gap to list his absent wife  ;D

Yes was terrible writing.  Have also found Francis father, mother and siblings although still to find his parents marriage. :) All born at Eaton, Leicestershire although as yet where Elizabeth was born is unknown.

Father was Thomas SHELTON [shoe maker] and mother is Elizabeth. The earliest record for a child is the birth of William and baptism 13 Jan 1799.

I had wondered if his mother is Elizabeth DUNSMORE but now not so sure.  :-\ As soon as I have completed entering the baptisms I will see if I can find Thomas & Elizabeth in just maybe and hopefully the 1851 census.  Fingers crossed.
