I am trying to sort out my ancestors - it is proving very difficult.
Richard Williams and Martha are on the 1871 census living in Preston, Sussex. They have a 2 month old son, Stephen, born in Preston in 1871. Martha's title is wife. Richard Williams was born in Bishop's Castle, Shropshire. I have checked the GRO indexes and I feel sure Martha's maiden name is Smith. However, I can't find a marriage for them.
I found a Richard Williams on the 1861 census aged 38, a lodger in Westminster but down as married. I can't be sure if it is him. Can find a Richard Williams born in Bishop's Castle, Shropshire with a family up to 1861 but can't be sure if its the right person.
I am hoping someone can help at least with the Sussex part of this query.

1871 census, since you don't give it in full.
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:VFDC-MYZ (no kids other than Stephen)
1881: https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:X9X2-F71 (stephen using JOHN )
1891 https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:48GP-62M (in Brighton, with another child)
1901 for Stephen J , now married. https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:X9X2-F71
which particular census entries are you considering for Richard williams?

If the 7 year old Edward in 1881 was born in Ripe, then his birth reg might be
June 1874 Lewes 2b 179
Williams, Edward
mother Reed
And whilst I can see a Martha Reed of approximately the right age born Hellingly in the census, I can't see a Martha Smith.

Baptism, 8 April 1832, Hellingly
Martha
Dr. of John & Maria Reed
abode Hellingly
father a Labourer
She could be a servant in Brighton in 1851

Possibly might be her in Hove in 1861?

Hi Pauline J
I started with the ones I know to be true -
1901 census - Richard Williams aged 78, born Bishops Castle, Shropshire
-
Lost the thread!
and Martha Williams wife 69, born Hellingley, Sussex. living in Surbiton, Surrey.
Before that 1891 census - Richard Williams
Martha Williams
Stephen J Williams 20
Edward Williams 16
-
Back to 1851 census, I was looking at Richard Williams Head aged 30 Labourer born More, Shropshire.
Elizabeth Williams 35 born Montgomeryshire
Richard Williams b 1846
Jane Williams b 1848
Mary Williams b 1849
William Williams - - -
-
I can see the birth record for Edward Williams with mmn as Reed but I can't find one to correspond for the older son Edward.
-
Maybe...
Richard Williams m Martha Davies 1863 Knighton 11b 293
Knighton is about 20Km from Bishops Castle.
-
So you were considering the father of that 1851 family unit?
(More being 5 miles or less from Bishop's Castle?)
https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:SG6D-79W (1851 census)
I can't find 'em in 1861, although a few of the baptisms are out there.
Jane Williams bapt 17 May 1846
Mary Williams bapt 14 May 1848
William Williams bapt 13 October 1850
Thomas Williams Bapt 6 March 1853 (same place, same parents)
It looked like kids should be registered in Clun?

Solidrock - Thank you very much for that suggestion. It would fit as far as place and year are concerned but there are births that would fit unfortunately.

Yes that's the one I started with. Thought it possible that he could have left this family -why - I have no answer - there is the Richard Williams in London on the 1861 which says married but he is not with his family. I have a feeling he did not marry Martha - unfortunately she did not make the 1911 census so we don't have a possible year of marriage.
I will another try at following up that family in Shropshire to see what happened to his wife Elizabeth - maybe that might help.

I have been trying to follow up my first family - Richard and Elizabeth living in Bishops Castle on the 1851 census. Still haven't find any of them on the 1861. I'll try the 1871.
