Perhaps I am following the wrong man?

Re year of birth for your chap (as per topic heading) .... have you searched the VIC BDM online index ... :) :) it is free to search and you can order, plastic card pay and download image immediately ... images for VIC births usually very detailed including parents origins, baby's older siblings etc
ADD if born 1880 cannot have married 1886 ..

I have asked for the thread to be moved to the main Australia board where I expect it will catch the eyes of several experienced VIC RChatters.

From NSW BDM there is a marriage in 1886 for Robert Albert WATSON and Emma COOK at Ryde reg 4857/1886 Is this the man that you want to find the birth for? Obviously different to the man I was following.

Not sure what information you are looking for. The marriage Ros found looks like your man. There are a number of births to this couple on NSW BDM (which is free to search), including Alma M WATSON in 1891 (registerd at Adamstown) who died in 1913. There is a funeral notice for his daughter Alma Mary in the SMH 25 Aug 1913. Her address is Factory St, Clyde.

and a lovely obituary here:
http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article85968827 (first column about half way down the page)
The sister Mrs N Hambridge mentioned in the above notice is Annie L WATSON (b1887, registered at Brisbane Water) who married Neil A HAMBRIDGE registered in Sydney 1911.
The sister mentioned in the obit is Melva (b1893, registered at Picton). she died in 1956, reg at Paddington.

This looks like Albert's death in 1918 at Factory St, Clyde
