Title: Disappearing Charlotte Puckeridge after 1861 - fresh eyes needed to find her.
Post by: RichardK on Thursday 18 January 18 17:11 GMT (UK)
I'm stumped with this one. Any fresh leads appreciated.

Charlotte Sinfield, born around early 1790s at "Brickhill" in Bucks (there are at least three Brickhills in Bucks but she  didn't specify which in the censuses).

Married 1st (1810) James Hemmings - several children around the Bucks / Beds borders, settling at Tilsworth in Beds by 1820s. James dies 1841.

Married 2nd (1852) William Kempson at Totternhoe, Beds. He dies 1856.

Married 3rd (1857) William Puckeridge at Luton. They then appear at Yarkhill in Herefordshire in 1861 census - 100 miles from Luton. William working as railway labourer. I've found the Hereford and Worcester railway passes through Yarkhill parish and was under construction in 1861 - it opened later that year.

I then completely lose sight of Charlotte and William, and William's daughter Eliza (b. 1848, Standon, Herts) who had been with them in 1861.

Can anyone work out what became of Charlotte? If they were following where the railways were being built, they could have gone anywhere. I have found a William Puckridge who died in 1863 aged 64 at Newington, south London, which is a bit older than William said in the censuses but not beyond the realms of possibility. Even if that is him, no sign of Charlotte.

Thoughts?
Many thanks
Richard

She is recorded as aged 54 in 1861 - so a big change from an "early 1790's" birth.

The one baptism I could locate was a Charlotte Sinfield 9th June 1793 Little Brickhill Father John Mother Jane

Thanks both - I'm aware she gave fluctuating ages - when she married William Puckeridge in 1857 they said she was 55 and he was 40, yet by 1861 there was only 4 years between them:

Class RG9; Piece 1811; Folio 25; Page 24, 7 Apr 1861.
Address: Poppinger Railway Hut, Yarkhill, Herefordshire
William Puckeridge, head, married, male, 50 [1810/11], Railway Lab[ourer], b. Hertford
Charlotte Puckeridge, wife, married, female, 54 [1806/7], Railway Lab[ourer] Wife, b. Brickell, Bedford [sic]
Eliza Puckeridge, daughter, unmarried, female, 13 [1847/8], b. Hertford

I suspect she was trying to reduce the 'gap' between herself and her husband.

Here she is in 1851 too:
Class HO107; Piece 1757; Folio 23; Page 9, 30 Mar 1851.
Address: Lower End, Totternhoe, Bedfordshire
Charlotte Emmens, head, widow, female, 59 [1791/2], Straw Plaiter, b. Brickhill, Buckinghamshire
Ann Kempson, daughter, unmarried, female, 13 [1837/8], Straw Plaiter, b. Tilsworth, Bedfordshire

(she's not the Charlotte Hemmings from Little Brickhill living in Northampton - I looked into her and think she was widow of a William and mother of the Ann Turland with whom she was living)

The 1793 baptism at Little Brickhill sounds plausible, but for the fact that when she married William Kempson in 1852 she gave her father's name as William Sinfield, not John.

Thanks
Richard.

An Eliza Puckridge married in Q/E Jun 1874 in West Ham Reg Dist -- wonder if this was William's daughter? Can't see her in 1871 though at the moment.

:) OK wish I had known her father was a William, so Ann Kempson aged 13 b Tilsworth, if Charlotte did not marry William Kempson until 1852 why is she shown as daughter and Charlotte a Widow?

In case it helps find Eliza, her birth was registered (Ware) Jun qtr 1848 as Eliza Puckeridge.  She was baptised at High Cross, Herts on 11 Jan 1848.  Birthplace given as Standon, Herts in 1851 (when the family was in Standon).

Presumably a widow because James Hemmings has died; Ann Kempson perhaps in fact a daughter of her future husband?

Hello - just to clarify, the Ann Kempson with Charlotte in the 1851 census was a granddaughter - Charlotte's daughter Mary had married a Joseph Kempson. The William that Charlotte married in 1852 was Joseph's uncle.

Ah yes - just seen that Mary and Ann Kempson were at the same address as James & Charlotte Emmings and family in 1841, though marked as a separate household.

Looks like that Eliza married a Charles Owen. Have eliminated the other possible spouse from there being children of his surname with the other bride's mmn

Can't find them yet  - or  any children

??? What a puzzle, looking for William picked ( I believe) the incorrect marriage a William Bonwick HEMINGS who married 12th March 1863 Tilsworth to a Ruth Sears, looks to be the other William on 1841 b c 1840/1, have him in 1881 as William B Emmens with Ruth
RG11/1639/126/6
Was his mother the Jane in 1841?

EDIT Yes a Jane Hemmings married William Bonwick 5th January 1843 Tilsworth

Okay - looking at the baptisms of Charlotte's children (all from her first marriage to James Hemmings), I think we have:

John 28 Feb 1814, Bow Brickhill
Joseph 7 Apr 1817, Little Brickhill
James 10 Aug 1817, Tilsworth - mother's name given as Caroline
Mary Ann 30 Jan 1820, Tilsworth - mother's name given as Caroline
Jane 1 Sep 1822, Tilsworth
Rebecca 6 Feb 1825, Tilsworth
William 23 Dec 1827, Tilsworth
Phoebe 4 Jun 1830, Tilsworth
Susannah 3 Mar 1834, Tilsworth

With Charlotte seemingly recorded as Caroline on a couple of occasions, I also notice this marriage:

m. William Charles HARRIS & Caroline PUCKRIDGE, September Quarter 1874, West Ham Registration District, Volume 4a, page 53

In the same district and the quarter after the Eliza Puckridge marriage that Pennines spotted. Can anyone see work out who that couple are, or find that marriage to check it online? Not obviously leaping out at me - may need to fork out £9.25 again if not.

Thanks
Richard

Thanks Keyboard - I think you've found enough to rule out the 1874 marriage from further consideration. Well done.

I'll have to keep looking for what became of Charlotte after 1861.

Thanks
Richard.
