Title: Long shot - looking for Gypsy James Lee.
Post by: Steven Lee Donnelly on Thursday 18 January 18 19:15 GMT (UK)
Hello, I am trying to find the death certificate for my uncle James Lee.

James Lee D.O.B was 6th November 1912, he was born in Glasgow Road Barrhead within the parish of Paisley. James had 10 siblings and he was the 2nd eldest son.

James parents where Henry Lee and Jane Coleman.

I have been trying to find James's death certificate for 2/3 years now but with no joy due to not knowing where he went post war.

I have just been informed by one of my newly found cousins that he traveled to London where over time contact was lost and nobody heard from him. Could someone please have a search for him?

My farther and uncle died at the age of 80 - logic tells me he could have died at a similar age, but my head tells me that this doesn't mean anything when it comes to genealogy as anything could have happened to him; needle in the haystack comes to mind.

Any help would be greatly received.

Many thanks,
S

Have you got him on the 1939 register?

Good evening dawns,

To be honest I haven't looked yet, just getting back on the family tree trail.

So I checked the death index upto 2007 on Ancestry as that database allows you to enter exact dates of birth but there wasn't a match (although there are other James Lees with other dates of birth) so the inferences at this time are that he died before 1969 when they started recording dates of birth, the informant didn't know his exact date of birth when his death was registered, or that he died after 2007.

Thank you for searching. The only information I have is his birth certificate, the information provided by my cousin was just that - He traveled/wondered ending up in London, then no contact from him. I have no clue what age he died, or even he died in the London area. This is the only lead I have - very frustrating.

Have you a vague sort of time frame for him arriving/living in London and what his occupation might have been?

It would have been post ww2 - around 1950 I would say. Occupation it’ll be a guess at road worker/labour.

To help differentiate the numerous James Lee, does he have a middle name?

Hello mirl, no middle name unfortunately. I'm making the assumption based on best guess that he came down in 1950 it may have been straight after the war.

Steven

I've just had a look at the London electoral registers for 1955 (random year) which are available with a sub on Ancestry.

There are about 30 plain James Lee's listed all across the region.

Do you have access to Ancestry? if not try your local library as many have free in-house access.

As you say, it's a long shot and will take quite a while but you could look at each of the names and plot their movements backwards and forwards and see who they are living with and try to rule out certain men by cross referencing with the death index.

Also have a look on the GRO England & Wales death index upto 2007 on Ancestry to see if there are any possible entries who may have a similar birthdate but not quite right.

Based on him having no middle name I have narrowed it down to for possibles.

Was there a census in 1951? I can cross reference the 4 as a start.
