Title: Great Waltham baptism look up request
Post by: Olicana on Sunday 21 January 18 01:27 GMT (UK)
I have found two separate baptisms on 1 January 1832, both in Great Waltham, both for William Poulton, both with mother Elizabeth, but one has father William and the other has father James  ???

I suspect, these refer to the same child and the father has been mistranscribed in one of the records. Could someone look this baptism up and check for me please?

Thank you :)

There are two baptism sources at the bottom of that page; one listing James as father and one listing William. William Poulter has been entered as the father, but the Poulters were a different family living in the same area at the same time, so I think that may be erroneous.

Is it possible to see the actual baptism registration to see which is correct?

There's nothing on FreeReg so you would probably have to contact Seax.

Having looked at the baptism register online, your William’s parents are james and Elizabeth. That’s because there are two Williams baptised same day, but the other one is William POULTER. Obviously been mistranscribed.

nannyj is correct and he appears on 1841 with his Parents (and later Census also) under Poulter.

William POULTER married Elizabeth BUSH 28 December 1828, Great Waltham, Essex

Thank you nannyj, that is what I suspected, and thank you trish1120 for the extra proof.  I think James was baptised in Great Waltham on 1 May 1791 (parents John Poulton and Susanna nee Collard), which fits with his age in the 1851 census, but not the 1861 census you found (maybe another transcription error ?). I wonder where William and James were in 1841....  ???

Going by his census records  and the birth record for a james poulton on the births registrations, I’d agree that John and susannah are his parents.
James of John and susannah, nee collard, baptised great Waltham 1/5/1791.
John and Susanna married great Waltham 30/1/1774. One of the witnesses was John Poulton senior.
John was baptised great Waltham 29/9/1751 to John and Sarah Poulton (not found their marriage yet).
Susannah was baptised 4/8/1754 to Simon and Mary nee Eddes also great Waltham. Simon and Mary married great Waltham 21/1/1738.
Mary eddes was baptised in great Waltham 27/5/1717 to Joseph and Mary nee Newny. They married 23/10/1715 great Waltham.
Mary newny was baptised great Waltham to John and Martha 8/6/1690.
