Title: Marion Callander - Please help me find her!
Post by: Sh1234 on Monday 22 January 18 01:08 GMT (UK)
Hi
I'm looking for Marion Callander (this may be her current or maiden surname) who resided in Dundee.  She had a job role as house maid and spent time in Clement Park Nursing Home in Lochee around 1957.

Unfortunately I don't have a DOB for her but I guess it to be around 1940-42ish.

I haven't had any luck with Ancestry.com or other search sites.

Please help, any information greatly appreciated.  Thanks in advance.

Hi , welcome to RC  :)

The death that Wendy has found looks likely.......
Marion Duggan . death 21st Feb. 1991 , 22 Caldrum Street , born 7th Sept. 1933.

Marion appears to have 3 different surnames at birth Callander , Burns , and Wallace.

Duggan and Brown are probably from Marion's marriages.

Oops where are my manners Welcome to Rootschat from me as well
Marion married twice 1st in 1973 and then again in 1986
She was born 1933 in Dundee
As these are more recent dates the only place you'll find the details are at Scotlands People website
Or at one of their search centres

Hi
Could she possibly come from Dumfries? Mention of a Marion Lorrane Callender aged 4 in Dundee Courier 1946. Couple of people with name you are looking for in electoral roles on Findmypast.
Though I would imagine she most probably married.

Hi guys, it's amazing what you've both found already! thanks so much.

I think she may have been born around 1940s and have confirmation that her usual residence was at 11 st fillans terrace in Dundee.

I came across Marion from Dumfries several times in my search but wasn't sure this could be her.  Would you happen to have a link to the article please?

Is there a way to check addresses etc against a person?  She had a son who was born in Clement Park in July 57 too.

Thanks again xx

A very warm welcome to Rootschat.

The Dundee Courier, 15 Oct 1954, mentions an incident involving a 14 yr old living at 11 St Fillan's Terrace, St. Mary's, Dundee. It's not Marion but the surname is the same - sibling possibly?. Cannot post details (person may well be still alive)

Hi hanes thank you for the info.  Please may you tell me how to search the paper? I had a look on 'the archives' section of the courier but can't find the 'old' papers.  This could be helpful for my search.  Thanks again

The  Marion aged 4 from Dumfries mentioned in 1946 was the great great  grandniece ( I don't think I could work that one out!)of Kirkpatrick Macmillan, the "inventor" of the first bicycle.
No obvious connection with Dundee I m afraid.

Hiya I had a look on find my past and found the newspaper articles.  I can see that there is a possible relation to the Marion I'm looking for but I can't find any birth details for him.  His name is William Callendar and he stayed in the same area - I'm thinking this may be a brother or cousin?

Thank you.  I think I need to start looking to either confirm or rule out Marion born in 1933.  Will start looking for connections in this area.

I can rule out Marion from Dumfries.

Thanks again everyone for your help so far ☺

Hi guys - I have hit a bit of a block with the search.  I thought I'd ruled out one of the Marions but not I'm not so sure...  do any of you know how to see if someone has has brother or sister please?  I can't connect either of them to William Callander of the same address who was born 1940 at st Clements and think this would help me to get to the bottom of it.  Thanks for reading this and any help you may have xx

The only way would be to order both birth certificates from https://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk each Certificate costs £12

There is another way, if you can get to a Scotland's People Centre or get someone to go on your behalf or look them up for you.

Thank you both so much, I had no idea you could go to one of the centres and look up people.  I had been relying on the Scotland people record search on their website but didn't want to order just now.

Yes. In the centres you can look at all certificates up to about a year ago, but you can't print or save them.

Given how recent the records that you want to check are, it would be so much better to visit on of the main genealogy centres and look at the certs there to try and figure out Marion's life and family.

You can also do a personal search for births after late 1920s (I always forget the year, Forfarian!) to include mother's maiden name.

There is at least one possible sister, Doris, born in 1934 in St Clements, Dundee. She died in Dundee in 1996 at the age of 64. Mother's maiden name given as Burns.

The surname of Duggan also features in Doris' death indexed entries. In fact there are four surnames indexed for her:

Callander
Duggan
Stewart
Smith

They all have the same ref of 351/ 542.

Possible marriage for Doris in Lochee in 1953. She shows as Burns/Callander marrying Duggan. Same surname as the possible marriage for Marion in 1986...

You certainly will need to sit in front of a screen and work though all the angles. We have their motheer with surname Burns. Callander could be the name of their father (can't see a marriage for this though but they may have lived together...just speculation until you check really).

Thank you forfarian - do you know if you are able to view the actual birth and death certificates after 1900 online at the centre rather than ordering them there?

Thanks Monica I didn't know about Doris.  Will also explore this.  I wondered about their mother too as there doesn't seem to be a marriage record for her or a first name.  I've been through a death register for those named burns in Dundee over the years so have some names to check there.  Will defo need to visit the search centre - with a big notepad for everything I've found and what you amazing guys here at roots have given me! I'm forever grateful to you all ☺

Forfarian is off line now. If I could answer your question.

You can look at BMDs right up to about about a year ago at these centres. You make notes of what you need and just work your way through them.

This child is also recorded on SP births under Callander/Burns/Wallace so seems to be linked to both Doris and Marion. As you already have a probable link address-wise between him and Marion ( i.e. 11,St Fillans Terr) this looks to be the family you are seeking.

The following from the Dundee Courier dated 26/9/1949 might be relevant.

Thank you all so much, I'll look over the article this afternoon and plan to check electoral roles for the area as soon as possible.

Would any of you know how I could confirm if this was the Marion who spent time/had a baby in Clement Park in 1957 once i have linked her to the address?  finally if there is no birth father listed on the birth certificate would there be a way to find this out (unlikely I know) and if it's a DNA check can you advise the best site please.

Thanks again for all your help ☺

Gosh, you are so good at finding these newspaper snippets, Isobel!

So many marriages and surnames flying about here. The one we haven't yet seen the origins for so far is Callander.

Given the period of the birth, were there no adoption papers with details available to view and check details on? www.nrscotland.gov.uk/research/guides/adoption-records

You have the baby's 1957 birth cert don't you? It is from this that you have mother's name as Marion Callander. Is it on this that you have an address for Marion of 11 St Fillans Terrace? I think this is the main strong link you have in identifying Marion's family. It has been a lucky strike with people's searches to have found so much on the family for this period of time online through mainly the newspaper clips that have been mentioned and added here.

Unless there is some reference to the reputed father on any adoption papers as part of the background info to the birth family, you are unlikely to find anything more for him I would say sadly.  His name was not included on the 1957 birth registration, without that info it is fairly impossible to know who he was isn't it.

I am assuming that the name given to baby born in 1957 did not include any surname as a middle name? This can sometimes provide some clues as to possible surname of reputed father.

Hiya the birth certificate doesn't mention a father unfortunately and there isn't a dob available for Marion Callander (mother).  The middle name is William so I think that links to the brother.

I find it interesting that Marions mother doesn't seem to have been married to Marion, William or Doris' father either but then went on to marry.  From looking at the addresses where Marion has been in Dundee they all seem to be in the same area.

I feel incredibly fortunate to have been given all these leads for the family and look forward to discovering more.

Thank you for answering the questions regarding the father etc. I didn't think it would be possible  :-\

There is also another Callendar female child born in 1939 with the three different surnames. Can't see any subsequent marriage or death.

I think these are divorce proceeding from first marriage for Annie Burns:

Thanks Monica this is interesting to know.  I wonder why the children (doria and william) had the surnames Callander when it appears she was married to Wallace when she had them.  Once I have more details and have cleared it up/made sense of all this info I'm going to visit the centre and look at all the relevant certificates in detail.
