Title: George Bollom
Post by: harkel25 on Monday 22 January 18 01:14 GMT (UK)
Hi,
I apologise if this query is being posted in the wrong area.
I am hoping to find some information about George Bollom, who was born c. 1836, in Australia, I believe. He may have died in Ballarat.
George Bollom married Julia Catterson in 1858. (Julia may have gone by the surname Berry, as I think she was previously married).
My grandmother always understood that George Bollom's family was from Spain and that the surname may have have originally been Bollomino (or something similar).
I believe that George Bollom was born in Australia, although I don't know when or where. I would love to find out the names of his parents so I can explore the possibly-Spanish connection.
Thank you.

BOLLOM is a very unusual name.  This may be Elizabeth aged 20 on the 1851 census.

Found a baptism for what could be George's sister Elizabeth dated 3 Sep 1830 with parents George, a porter and Elizabeth.  Sadly the address was the Workhouse in 1830.  On familysearch.org

Probably why the OP thinks George died at Ballarat. :)

My resource shows Julia Mary's father as CAKERSON. ::)

The Ballarat Star 14thJuly1888 https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/209444552?
The enquiry into the death of Mrs Bollom, who on Saturday last committed suicide, was concluded yesterday by Mr Thomson, P. M., district coroner. Dr Morrison, on account of whose indisposition the enquiry had been adjourned, detailed the circumstances connected with his visiting the deceased and treating her for poisoning. He was of opinion that the deceased had taken the poison about three-quarters of an hour before he saw her, and consequently the remedial measures he adopted were inefficacious, the poison having taken too firm a hold of the system. To Dr Morrison deceased said she had taken the poison because people did not care for her, or what be came of her, and that she was a trouble to her friends. Tlie coroner returned a verdict “ that Julia Mary Bollom, on the 7th day of July, 1888, at Ballarat, died from the effects of poison, to wit, strychnine, administered by herself.”

As a matter of interest, noting the KIBBY name in CofL's findings, Julia Mary BOLLOM shares her burial location with Maxwell KIBBY who died in 1925 aged 3.

I would comment here that our OP suggests 1836 as a birthdate for the man.
However, looking at the age on records for Julia (nee CATTERTON) she seems to have been born in the 1820's
It seems just a little more likely he was born in that decade too, which would fit with the George BOLLIN above.

George BOLLIN may just be a different person but was the 'nearest' in name to Julia's husband.

So with Julia being a boarding house keeper at Ballarat I wondered if her husband might have been a publican?

TROVE has articles from the early 1860's that mention a George BOLLIN who had a publican's license and was a landlord at Daylesford.

Not your George BOLLOM.  This George BOLLIN with wife Alice are listed as shareholders in a gold mine in 1864.  And I bet he is the one at Daylesford.  The one BOLLIN on the early indexes.

I didn't detail the newspaper items about Julia's death as the inquest file is available to download from PROV.  The link in my reply.

Reading the OP's request it is really for information about George BOLLOM.  Surely the OP has done some of his/her family history.  Perhaps we should wait to see if any further help is required.

am hoping to find some information about George Bollom, who was born c.

It would appear that this George's death in 1862 at the Melbourne Hospital has not been registered and if so more than likely under an obscure name.  I have trawled through all the 368 George 1862 deaths.  Nothing jumps out as being George BOLLOM.

The 1858 marriage cert would certainly be helpful.

Going to William CASTERTON of Spring Street, Little Scotland, Geelong.

I think that Julia's parents also emigrated.  Her mother died in 1854 and father re-married in 1857 and died in 1871.  This is possibly already known to the OP.
