Title: Keeley and Allensby of Islington, St Pancras, St Marylebone
Post by: gingernut1 on Tuesday 23 January 18 11:26 GMT (UK)
Hi

My Great Grandfather was William Allensby Keeley (b Islington 1847) and his father my 2x G Grandfather was William (b 1816 could have been Limerick or this country, jurys out on that one).

I was doing a bit of digging around and came across a marriage between William Gillman Keeley and Elizabeth Allensby in 1852 (this was his 2nd marriage 1st wife was Caroline Verzey d 1845). In turn Elizabeth remarried in 1873 to Frederick Henry Kangiesser. She died in 1898.

I am sure that there must be some connection between William Gillman and Elizabeth and my Keeleys.  Allensby is not a common first name and I am sure there must be a link somewhere. I can't find much about them or their immediate relatives who I am fairly sure  will connect to mine.

Does anyone out there have any connections or knowledge to help.

Many thanks
Ginger

FindMyPast baptisms (images)
Catholic Chapel - Saffron Hill

Born - May? 9th 1847 (has been transcribed as Jan), bap - Jun 27 1847, name - William Keeley, father - William, mother - Mary, sponsors Thomas Keeley and Ellen Castello?.

Question - is your William with William and Mary (parents) and siblings Thomas and Mary Ann in both the 1851 and 1861 Census?

William Allensby Keeley's birth was registered in the March Quarter (ie. Jan-Mar) 1847.

The William Keely baptised to William and Mary Keely on 27th Jun 1847, was born 9 May 1847, the June Qtr (ie.Apr-Jun) 1847. I have looked at the original image and am satisfied it says May, not Jan as transcribed by FindMyPast.

However, I cannot find a GRO birth registration to fit the 9 May birth?

Hi

I'm just digesting your posts....   you have made more headway in the last hour than I have in the last few years.....

Firstly, no I have never been able to confirm maiden name of Mary (Mother)

2. Thomas, Mary Ann and William Allensby are the family members shown in the censuses.

It looks like Mary Unknown is actually an Allensby.

I use Ancestry just now will recheck although I've not been having much luck.   Now I know Mary Ann is an Allensby its opened up a new branch on my tree,

Thank you so much

Ginger

I'm far from satisfied that the William Keely, parents William and Mary Ann on the '51 and '61 Census, is William Allensby Keely.

His mother is an Allensby - but you cannot speculate her given names are Mary Ann.

There's a Thomas Keely, birth registered Jun Qtr 1844, The Islington District, 3 241 - mother's maiden name Collins.

You need the birth certificate.

You are right - I'll get on to it.

Thank you again.

Well.... The birth cert has arrived with a bit of a curved ball.
The parents of William Allensby Keeley are

William Gillman Keeley born 4 May 1814 St Marylebone  and
Elizabeth Allensby birth unknown died 1887 and not who I thought was his mother
They married 19 Sept 1852 St Marylebone.
The 3 children of the marriage were
Mary Ann b 1850
William Allensby (my Gx2 Gfather) b 7 Feb 1847
Thomas b 1844 St Giles Middlx .

Now Caroline 1st wife(nee Verzey) died in 1845 so I am wondering if Thomas was her or Elizabeth's son.  William Allensby and Thomas were born before the 2nd marriage.

William Allensby's birth cert shows Elizabeth Keeley not Allensby as his mother as though they were married then.

Could anyone do me a look up in Parish records to see if Mary Ann and Thomas's parentage is shown?  If I'm honest I can't find the original records that led me to these on my PC.   I lost a lot of information a while ago when it crashed.

Many thanks

What is the relevance of Thomas and Mary Ann?  It seems to me they are in a different family entirely (headed by William & Mary aka Mary Ann) - that William still being alive in 1881 after your William Gillman Keeley died in 1872?

I think Thomas and Mary are wrong.   I must have originally got the wrong family.

Thank you for all this.  My grandmother was the daughter of William Allensby Keeley and she was a Fanny - looks like she was named after the daughter who died.   I've got a bit of work to do tomorrow now altering the tree.   I do appreciate your efforts.

I see that William A Keeley and his wife also had (in 1867) a daughter Rose - presumably named after his other deceased sister.

Rose was with her Keeley grandparents in the 1871 census: RG10/264/58/15.

Thank you again.  You folks are great and generous with your time.
The Ely connection was a surprise - another road for me to travel down  :)
