Title: Birth/Marriage record request - Newborough, Evans Family 1802
Post by: HDeFer on Tuesday 23 January 18 21:16 GMT (UK)
Hi there, a bit stuck in the search.  Looking for information on Thomas Evans (and his parents), born around 1802, in Newborough.

1841 - He lived at Tyn Llwyn (Trefdraeth) with his son, Evan, and mother, Elizabeth.
1861 - Pen-Dref St. in Newborough.
1871 - Rabbit dealer and wife (Ellen) was a matmaker on Malltraeth St. Newborough.
1881 - Address listed as Lyn Capel or Ty Capel in Newborough

Would love to know about Thomas' parents (my 5X GGrandparents), as well as find a marriage cert for Thomas and Ellen (nee Williams).  We believe they may have been married at St. Peter's church in Newborough - but we could be wrong. Thank you for any information you can find!  My sister and I are visiting in June and hope to visit some of these amazing places!

Hi, welcome to RootsChat.

If Thomas's surname is patronymic there are possible baptisms for both Thomas and Ellen at St Peter's, Newborough. (FindmyPast)

Thomas son of Evan Thomas, Llwynysgow(?), & Elizabeth his wife -1802 (day & month are not visible but month is August or September).
Agnes & Ellin twin daughters of William Williams Labourer & Ellin his wife 1808 - Oct 20+(?).
(Also in the same year - Elizabeth daughter of Evan Thomas, Llwynysgow(?), & Elizabeth his wife - 1808, Jun ??).

Do you also have the 1851 census?
At Pendref St, Newborough - Thomas Evans, 48, Farm Labr; wife Ellen, 42; father (in law?) William Williams, 82, Farm Labr Pauper. All b. Newborough.

Hi again, I do not think the couple married until:-

14th March 1851 Newborough

Thomas Evans WIDOWER Father Evan Thomas ( Amended surname )
Ellen Williams  Spinster Father William Williams
Witnesses William Williams & Owen Evans

Got to go to bed, perhaps he was firstly  married aged 21 to a Margaret Griffith aged 19 14th November 1843 ( Now not certain of this, as father shown as Evan Evans)? Newborough and then to a Ann Jones 27th September 1847 Newborough as a Widower?

Thomas Evans WIDOWER Father Evan Evans
Ellen Williams  Spinster Father William Williams
Witnesses William Williams & Owen Evans

Slight correction - marriage certificate shows Thomas Evans, Widower, father Evan THOMAS.

1841 - He lived at Tyn Llwyn (Trefdraeth) with his son, Evan, and mother, Elizabeth.

Assuming this is the correct family (are you descended from Evan?) Evan's baptism was at Trefdraeth 22 Jun 1834 - Evan Griffith son of Thomas & Elizabeth Evans, Tyddyn llwyn, farmer.

Also at Trefdraeth there was a marriage between Thomas Evans (bachelor) and Elizabeth Jones, both of Trefdraeth, on 25 Sep 1833. Both signed, the witnesses were John Parry and Margaret Williams.

Elizabeth Evans of Ty'n llwyn was buried at Trefdraeth on 4 Feb 1839, age 25.

Thomas & Elizabeth had two other sons baptised at Trefdraeth:
Emmanuel son of Thomas & Elizabeth Evans, Ty'n llwyn, farmer - 13 Nov 1836
Thomas son of Thomas & Elizabeth Evans, Ty'n llwyn, farmer - 10 Feb 1839
Both died young and were buried at Trefdraeth:
Emmanuel Evans, Ty'n Llwyn age 2 on 13 Mar 1838
Thomas Evans, Ty'n Llwyn age 3 on 3 Nov 1841

But there is a problem!

Thomas Evans' mother Elizabeth died in 1842 and was buried at Trefdraeth. The burial register has Elizabeth Jones, Ty'n llwyn, age 79, 2 Jul 1842 (Jones was Elizabeth's maiden name retained under the old Welsh patronymic system).
Elizabeth's death registration has:
Elizabeth Evans, age 79, died 28 Jun 1842, Trefdraeth. She was described as the widow of Emanuel Evans, the informant was Robert Evans.

Emmanuel Evans was also buried at Trefdraeth - 31 Aug 1836, age 73, again the abode was Ty'n Llwyn.

So who was Thomas Evans father? The 1851 marriage to Ellen Williams gives his father as Evan Thomas, which agrees with the baptism at Newborough in 1802. The information above suggests Emanuel Evans.

The Thomas Evans at Ty'n llwyn in 1841 died in 1842.

Trefdraeth burial register (P41, 324) has Thomas Evans, Ty'n llwyn, age 43, buried 28 May.
The death registration has Thomas Evans, 43, farmer, died 25 May 1842 at Trefdraeth, the informant was Robert Evans.

If this Thomas Evans is your ancestor I can supply more information about his parents and siblings.

Wow, thank you everyone!  We have Thomas Evans listed as born in 1802, but that would be within a year or two - so it sounds reasonable/logical at this point that he is our guy.  Yes, we are descendent of Evan Griffith Evans, and down the line through his son Evan Richard Evans, Robert John Evans, Robert Griffith, Mark Robert Evans (my dad), and then me - Heather (Evans) DeFer.  Sounds like Trefdraeth is where we need to look for gravestones for several family members.  Are there multiple churches in Trefdraeth that we need to look at or did you uncover a specific church parish?  This information has been so helpful, as we prepare to come over and walk in their shoes in June.  I appreciate your help!

So the questions that pop up now are:

1. We had a Thomas Evans die at Tyn Llwyn in 1841 at 3 years old, and the dad Thomas - possibly dying at Tyn Llwyn in 1842.  Are both accurate?  We believe our line is via Thomas and Ellin - but Evan Griffith is our ancestor, which would make Elizabeth Jones our GGGG Grandmother.  Thoughts or any other findings to support this?
2. Who was Thomas Evans' father?  Evan Thomas or Emmanuel Evans?  Was the patronymic name system still in use at that time?
3. Which churches and cemeteries do we need to visit in Trefdraeth for baptism and burial records?

Thank you so much, and I will start working on these questions as well this weekend.  You have all been so helpful!

2. Who was Thomas Evans' father?  Evan Thomas or Emmanuel Evans?
Hi Heather,

I believe Emanuel Evans was Thomas Evans father, grandfather of Evan Griffith Evans. I would like to summarize below what I have found about this family and attempt to answer your other questions, including the reliability of the sources, later. The Thomas Evans of Newborough, son of Evan Thomas, who married Ellen Williams in 1851, and who you have traced through the 1851 - 1881 censuses, was a different person (and may not have had any descendants).

The baptisms and burials in Trefdraeth parish records for the Evans family already given all link to Ty'n/Tyddyn Llwyn as the abode. In the 1841 census, while it is indicated that Thomas and Evan were born Anglesey (born in county = y), Elizabeth was born outside the county.

There are two Calvinistic Methodist baptisms with father Emanuel Evans & mother Elizabeth (maiden name) Jones for a son Joseph 7 Oct and 20 Oct 1806, the family live at Ty'n Llwyn, Trefdraeth but, very helpfully, the mother's parish before marriage is given as Llansannan, Denbighshire.

There is a marriage in Llansannan parish records between Emanuel Evans (bach. of Llanrhaidr) and Elizabeth Jones (otp) on 8 Aug 1785. Witnesses Thomas Jones, (illeg.) Lloyd.

A series of baptisms took place at Amlwch with father Emanuel Evans (miner) and mother Elizabeth, they are listed below:

Robert - 27 Oct 1787
Griffith - 19 May 1792
Thomas - 28 Jun 1794 (Burial Amlwch 20 Nov 1797, Thomas Evans, Bontfawr, infant)
Hannah - 4 Mar 1797 added burial Amlwch 24 Nov 1797, Hannah Evans, Bontfawr, infant
Thomas - 10 Nov 1798
Evan - 21 Feb 1801

Finally there is a nonconformist baptism at Rhosmeirch Chapel on 24 Mar 1803 for Willm. son of
'Manuel Evans, Methodist Preacher. The mother's name is not given.

I haven't searched for any of Thomas Evans' siblings but a Robert Evans was the informant when the deaths of Thomas Evans (1842) and Elizabeth Evans (also 1842) were registered.

Regards
