Title: Burial St Helier
Post by: chirp on Wednesday 24 January 18 13:18 GMT (UK)
I am new to Jersey research and wondered if anyone can tell me if there is or was a graveyard at St Helier parish church? If so, is there a searchable database for the monumental inscriptions? I am looking for any details relating to the death of a child, Louisa Maria Neville, who was buried at St Helier on 1 March 1842. I have done some searching online but can find nothing relating to MIs though I know that those on Alderney, and their records, were destroyed during WW2. Maybe this also happened in St Helier? I would appreciate any advice.

There is an entry in the St Helier burial records for a Louisa Maria Neville, aged 6 and buried on the date you have. Her parents were John Graham Neville and Maria Susan.
A transcription of this record is on the Jersey Archive site (subscribers section) and it is also on Ancestry, search the Jersey burial records with just Louisa Maria, they managed to miss out her surname.

Thank you for your reply. Yes I found this burial record on Ancestry and FindMyPast but I wondered if there was a headstone which may give me further details.

I would be interested to know if any other names are mentioned. I doubt they will be as this family did not stay in Jersey more than a few years as far as I know. Any references at all would be helpful.

A headstone is unlikely, most of the cemeteries that were in existence at that time are no longer there and the one that is - Green Street - is so overgrown that it's almost impossible to find anything in it. The Archive does have a list of memorial inscriptions for Green Street that I can look at next week.

Unfortunately there are no Nevilles listed in the folder of Green Street memorial inscriptions neither were there any in the folder of burials in the Strangers cemetery which covered some of the same time period.
