Hi,
I am looking for a man who I cannot find in any census returns.
Daniel Francis Reardon married Emily Elizabeth Marian Thomas on 22 September 1884 in Bromley, London. On the marriage note it says that Daniel is 28 I believe, son of John Reardon (A Bricklayer), a Mariner, of 38 St. Leonards Avenue.
Together with Emily I believe I have found 6 children registered -
Ellen Emily Thomas Reardon, Jan-Mar 1886 Poplar, Middlesex.
Agnes Mary/Mercy Reardon, born 19 Apr. 1888, 6 Spring Hill, Longton, Staffordshire.
Eugene Daniel Francis Reardon, Jul-Sept 1894 Southampton, Hampshire.
James Richard Reardon, Jul-Sept 1898 Cardiff, Glamorgan.
George William, 3 Jul. 1899 Worcester, Worcestershire.
Emily Elizabeth, Jan-Mar 1906 Reading, Berkshire.
All of the birth records for the children and the marriage records for Daniel & Emily were found on Andrews Newspaper Index Cards.
The family appear in no census returns, apart from the mother Emily who appears prior to her marriage to Daniel Reardon, with her parents Abraham Thomas & Emily Tittle.
I'm wondering if maybe they were travellers? Irish travellers perhaps.
Emily Died 26th Apr. 1940 in Bath, Somerset. Cannot find death record for Daniel.
Thanks - Keelan

The 1881 census has a Daniel F Riordan aged 23, single, born Hartlepool, Durham, an AB Seaman aboard the Aginccourt - RG11/5635/50/10.
Age is slightly out, but fits otherwise so worth looking into further perhaps?

This would be his birth registration:

An Agnes Mercy Reardon marries Joseph Curley in 4th qtr 1907 Bristol.
Check 1911 Census Bristol, one of her brothers is living with her.
-
Thanks so much, Just a simple name variation it seems.
His daughter Agnes is a great grandmother of my friend, her husband Joseph abandoned her and her children and had another family in London.
Any ideas why the family might not be in any census returns? Apart from Agnes/Richard.

Not sure if it is the Durham one yet.
It is odd that there are seemingly no sightings in any census until 1911.
Although the family moved around, I’m not convinced they were travellers according to Daniel’s occupations.
Has your friend purchased any birth certificates or Agnes’ marriage certificates for addresses and occupations?

Looks like one of the siblings died very young

Did find this in the Hampshire advertiser 10th Nov 1897, just the Christian names caught my eye and possibly your Daniel was around Southampton at that time. "Eugene Francis Daniel Reardon, a dealer was charged with being drunk and disorderly in Bassett yesterday"

Wonder if this was Daniel Francis with an added first name :-\
-
Baby Eugene was born in Southampton in 1894 so the family had been there. It does seem likely that it could be Daniel there in 1897.
According to marriage and children - Daniel’s occupation
1884 Mariner
1888 Engine Tenter
1899 General Labourer
I haven’t found the other children in Andrews Index cards :-\

The National School Admissions also lists William Reardon below Richard. William's birthdate is listed as 3/7/90 -presumably they got the wrong year as it should be 3/7/99!
William's birth on the Andrews Newspaper Index Cards also lists the families address as Dolday

Emily Elizabeth Marion Reardon death in 1940 was registered by P E M Reardon daughter in law, 83 Locksbrook Road, Bath.
I think the daughter in law is Phyliss Eveline May Morse who married Richard James Reardon on 14th March 1925, Bath Registry Office.
Richard James address 84 Locksbrook Road, Bath. States his father is Richard James Reardon, a fishmonger ???
One of the witnesses is w Reardon, brother george William, maybe :-\
Richard and Phyliss on 1939 Register as Rearson, 83 Locksbrook Road. Richard's date of birth 24th May 1898.
-
Still not finding them on any census' yet though ::)
-
National Schools Admissions has Richard and William Reardon leaving the city/school on 23rd December 1908.
-
Possibly William Reardon in 1917.
Bath Chronicle and Weekly Gazette 11th August 1917
Youth's Bad Beginning 'William Reardon,17, of Milk Street, was summoned for using bad language in the Gravel Walk on Sunday July 29th. He pleaded not guilty. The defendant and five others were smoking and discussing housebreaking. Reardon said he earned 16s. per week and was the support of his widowed mother, who gave him a good character. He was fined £1 or 14 days and cautioned about his future behaviour'.
There is a little bit more to the newspaper report.

Great finds!
No wonder he is so difficult to trace - so many names.
Perhaps he’s not the one from Durham.
-
Yes, great find :)
I wonder if there's any connection to the Daniel Francis Read born 1855 Marylebone who enlisted in 1876 and deserted the following year?

Agreed - Great finds - and I do wonder whether the possible desertion might be the reason for subsequent changes in both first and surname ???
Added - As a side issue found the baptism of Ellen Emily Thomas Readon with parents Daniel and Emily 26 May 1886 Bromley St Michael and All Angels, Tower Hamlets - Daniel is listed as a foreman?
