Title: Robert Reid and Elisabeth Hay, Ardrossan
Post by: Northern Gen on Thursday 25 January 18 21:11 GMT (UK)
Hi,

I'm looking for help with Robert Reid, a fabric manufacturer from Ardrossan. He married Elisabeth Hay in Renfrewshire in 1787 and I believe they had 9 children. His wife died in Ardrossan in 1837 but I have no information for Robert or his parents/siblings.

Any help would be great!

The following website caters for the "three towns" of Ardrossan, Saltcoats and Stevenson:
http://www.threetowners.net

Registration is free and there is a genealogy section where guests can input. There were REIDs (fishermen in competition with my MURRAYs) in Saltcoats which was then in the Parishes of either Ardrossan or Stevenston. Do not assume she died in the town of Ardrossan as it may have been that part of Saltcoats ascribed to the Parish of Ardrossan. Saltcoats later became a Parish in it's own right.

Good luck.

All 9 children are listed in Ardrossan on the birth records on Scotland's People.
Cannot find Robert on 1841 census, no Ardrossan death records on SP.

Thank you for the replies.

Robert Reid married his wife at Abbey in Renfrewshire and apparently travelled each Sunday to Paisley to attend church so perhaps he had links there? I don't know much about the Ardrossan area but I assume he ran his business from there for a reason. The only information regarding the type of business he ran was on the death certificate of his daughter, my 3xgreat grandmother, Jane Montgomery Reid, where it stated his occupation as a manufacturer. It looks like I'm going to have to dig a bit deeper to unearth information on the Reid family.
