Morning,
I have been asked to find a friend's grandmothers death that has puzzled the family for decades.
What do I know about her?
Her name was Josephine RUANE and she was born was born in 1883 to MATHEW and MARIA in LISMORE (NSW BDM Cert 29583/1883 )
She got married in 1906 to John G GIESE in CASINO (NSW BDM Cert. 6910/1906 )
Josephine and John had multiple children..........and then she disappears......well at least from NSW records.
I can't locate a remarriage, a death or a cemetery record, and Ancestry is not very forthcoming either!
Not sure if she travelled over the border and is hidden in the QLD or other records........but I would love to get a death date and hopefully cemetery location for Josephine.
Cheers

You can search the Qld online indexes with just the first letter of a surname and the wildcard - A* or B* etc.

Wow.........Debra, you are a superstar. Many thanks.
And Ros.......many thanks, and ditto to Matt.
Now the question is..........when did she marry Alfred Howard........not listed as Howard in NSW or QLD.
This is a woman who went to great lengths to disappear from her family........it will be interesting to unearth her secrets.

His is not a very unusual name, but do we think this is the same chap under a magistrate's order?

Good work Debra.
Did the GIESE family make an effort to find Josephine if she went missing?

This news item is about the application for divorce by Thomas ROPER.
His wife Catherine had been committing adultery with Richard Charles Henry HOWARD.
1905.
https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/171570573
It is a very complex tale ::) An infant is mentioned in 1893 and one assumes this is Alfred/Thomas.
There are at least two other births to Catherine nee WILLIAMS in the ROPER surname in QLD.

Alfred seems to continue to use the name ROPER in the earlier years and is on the 1916 to 1919 McKay Electoral Rolls
Alfred ROPER
Address Federal Hotel, McKay.
Painter.
No others of the surname there.
Despite this appearanc on he Roll, he seems also to have enlisted for WW1 as Alfred HOWARD His file is digitised. He had a nasty illness whilst an enlisted man.

His mother, Mrs C HOWARD had word of him in in England 1917

This chap who died in 1963 perhaps was a half brother to Alfred.

There are many Electoral Roll entries and other news items connecting these people, but perhaps not really relevant to OP's inquiry.
Can be all typed up if required ;D

Many thanks Sue........wounded and nasty diseases.......he had a time of the war didn't he!
I am unsure if the Giese family went looking for her, Wivenhoe..........the family, it appears, was fairly fractured, and not much information on personal matters was known.
I am fascinated that he chose to call himself by his mothers maiden name. That level of covering up, I am wondering if she ever got a divorce. I can't find one in NSW.
I will suggest that my friend gets this second marriage certificate to see if Josephine married as a divorced or single woman.
The one thing that seems to be hanging (and I haven't seemed to have found) is a grave photo.......any thoughts?
She is very grateful for all of the information you have found........you have made her extremely happy.
Many thanks

I personally am intriguedby this.
Josephine seemed to have a baby in NSW every year of her married time with GEISE.
Alfred ROPER/HOWARD seems never to have left northern Qld (according to electoral rolls) except for being away at the war.
So how did Josephine leave the young family and find her way to McKay?
What did she do to support herself and where did she lodge?
Sue
-
She seemed to have up and left the family in a hurry......but I am equally as intrigued as to how she managed to leave, travel, find somewhere to stay and support herself.
There does seem to be some Ruane families in Queensland, so I wonder of she took herself off to one of them and then met Mr Roper.
Cheers

I just spotted her on the E Roll in 1925 in QLD.
RUANE, Josephine.
Merinda, Bowen
Home Duties

Snap, Sue.
I was just looking at that and calculating the distance from Merinda to Mackay.........and it was just a year before she remarried.
What took her all that way, I wonder!

In 1925 Alfred HOWARD was at Forth Street, McKay.
A painter.
Sue

That's a fair distance to be commuting for love.......especially in those days........I am intrigued as to how they came together!
Thanks Sue.

It would be worth contacting the McKay City Council in regard to her burial at McKay Cemetery.
