Many thanks, all the best. Derek.

Do a google search on "Replica WW2 Medals" - most of them sell mounting kits.
I've used Mess Dress in the past (www.messdress.com), but others are available.

;) Thanks for reply, will give that a go.

Hi
I had my grandfathers medals mounted but it was expensive.
The framer I used is no longer in business but you could try a local picture framers and see if they can do it. Before you go just just have a few moments to think of what you want them to look like. My grandfther has 5 medals so I have them in a kind of V shape with a photo of him in the middle with his name, number & rank & thena thank you letter from an American Lt. Col. at the bottom.

John thanks for reply, bumped into an old mate this morning and he told me the same thing, yes will give some thought as to how medals should be presented, I'm lucky to have my dads ID photos' s from seaman's pouch, plus seamans sea certificate, so your suggestion of thinking about how to present medals has been invaluable!! Many thanks John, all the best to all. Derek ;)

I can also vouch for the site KGarrad recommended, my late husband used them for various things, so did some of his colleagues.

Thanks folks for time and kindness ;)
All the best.

Hi Derek, just spotted your post.
I'm in the same boat as you - intending to get both my grandfather's WW1 and my father's WW2 medals mounted.
I plan to use a very reliable local framing service whom I know has done medal mounting before. My thoughts on display are to use an image of the soldier at the time of service and then juxtapose a picture of the man he became in later life (retirement picture in both my cases). I also would require the medals to be mounted in a way that they can be removed from the mounting case so that they may be worn on Remembrance Day as they are on medal bars.
There are also some other bits and pieces - Auxiliary Fire Service badge, officer's rank pip, collar dogs, for example - which would also be included in the layout. The advice from others in this thread about "think hard before you commit to final decision re mounting" is a very good point and one which I will be bearing in mind for both of my relatives' medal cases.

Hi Derek,
I simply went online and typed in a search for Medal Mounting Services in Northern Ireland. There were very very few, unsurprisingly, but the lady I went to was brilliant and did a fantastic job. When I found that this lady had been entrusted with a Victoria Cross I knew she was the one for my Dad's and Grandfather's medals. Also, it was no great struggle for me to deliver the medals to her house and then return to collect the finished product.
In short, that's all I can suggest you do.

Actually, have a shufti at this: http://medalmount.simplesite.com/279696962
I typed in a search for Medal Mounting Teesside and the above website popped up. Might be worth a look?

I think it is wise to use someone experienced in mounting and framing medals. My OH's mother had his father's medals mounted by (I think) a regular picture framer. He did a good job except that he mounted the medals in the wrong order and I don't know what he used to glue them to the baize or whatever material he used, but it seems to be permanent. I attempted to remove them to see if it was possible to put the medals in the right order but they are pretty solidly stuck. :-\
I do like the displays which include medals, photos and other relics, however as we were given the medals framed alone, we have displayed them alongside a framed photo and his hat on a hat stand. That way we can add to the 'display' or move them around to suit. I find this works well, and would be a cheaper option than asking a framer to cut and arrange mounts to fit various items, photos etc.
Just something you may like to consider. :)

Thanks, Ruskie, that is an option to consider indeed. Your advice too about asking a properly experienced person to mount the medals is also very good. The lady whose services I used was extremely experienced and did a lovely job.

Thanks all, for good advice.
All the best.

Did he not also have a 1939-45 Star in addition to the medals you mentioned? I would have expected that given the criteria for the various medals, especially the other stars.
-
Skoyenn89 ;) yes he does have that medal, dont know ho i missed mentioning it ???
Thanks all.

Does anyone know if the miniature WW1 replacement medals from messdress.com are double-sided please ?
Other sites show both sides (but are more expensive & don't offer the pin option), so I'd like to use the recommended messdress, but I'd like double-sided miniatures.
Ignore - they've replied & yes they do :)
