I noticed one of mine lived at 'Steam Mill' and have been trying to find out what or where that is. I can't find any reference as to whether its an old mill or a place and wondered out of curiosity if anyone had heard of it?

Was this abode from a census? If so, which one, and can you give details of the person's name, reference numbers etc, so we can have a look? :)

Hi
This is a Steam Mill, but I don't know where yours is!

Steam mill house, station road, Carmarthen, likely attached to the brick and tile works, used to mill the clay to a mouldable

Enumerator's route at the beginning of each census (go to page one to see it) shows the path the enumerator takes, which can help narrow down a location. Then looking at the near neighbours can narrow it down further. The route can differ between censuses even if a person is at the same address. You can try to follow the route on an old map. The NLS side by side maps are particularly good as you can compare the location on an old and new map.

It is a mill where they used to grind smoke and steam to make fluffy clouds.
;) Sorry the question reminded me of when our three sons were little and we told them a power station cooling tower was one of the factories that made clouds as we drove past it.
Cheers

Brilliant helpful replies. Thank you all. I thought it had something to do with a laundry, lol. ;D

Address wise, the 1881 census runs -
Parade - Elm Lodge
Trae Lover's Lane
Castle Hill Cottage
Station Road - 1 household (Ann Lewis)
Station Road - Dyer's House
Station Road - Steam Mill House (3 households inc. William Williams))
Station Road - Corner House
Steam Mill - Nos 8-1
Towyside - Nos 1-7
Railway Inn
On this 1888 map you can find "Parade -Elm Lodge, Castle Hill (but not "Cottage"), Station Road, Towyside and the Railway Inn
https://www.old-maps.co.uk/index.html#/Map/241429/219960/13/100223
On the Census return "Steam Mill, Nos 8-1" is not recorded under "Station Road".

Hi,
The Steam Mill, the people who lived there, what was their occupation?
The Steam Mill in Chester was a Flour Mill powered by steam.
Now a hotel.

It was on a census given as place where child lived and was in Carmarthen in Wales.

There is also a corn mill on station road which may be a better bet than my brickworks

Care to elaborate? Further details may be available ... or are you happy with the information already supplied? :)
-
I have a list of a family from the census and the address of the child's birth was Steam Mill. That's why I asked what it was and I am very happy with the response of the kind people on here. :)
-
That's OK then. :) I thought it might be fun to fiddle round with some old maps trying to locate it, but if you are happy, then that's good. ;)
-
:) If you want to fiddle around with anything, that's fine by me. :)

Pigot's Directory of South Wales 1830
CARMARTHEN
Millers
6 millers are listed, including -
Yalden William, STEAM MILL
Pigot's Directory of South Wales 1822
No mention of Steam Mill but there is a Corn Mill, Arnold and Griffith, Kidwelly Vach"** - not mentioned in the 1830 Directory
Pigot's Directories of South Wales 1835 and 1844
No mention of Steam Mill
In 1831 a Mr Yalden, Llanelly was advertising a Tan-yard for sale situate near the Bridge, at Carmarthen, with a substantial Dwelling - house and suitable buildings
In 1834 a William Yalden of Llanelly advertised his residence, Vauxhall House, for sale since "he was about to remove". William Yalden may also have been in the timber trade.
** At this time the area around Steam Mill was known as "Kidwelly Fach". I have "walked" the Censuses 1841-1901 for that area and am still going round in circles (literally) trying to relate it to the 1880 map I posted previously.

The date I have for the child's address was his year of birth which was 1898 so it existed then.
