Is anyone able to say if the row in the photo at

is Pelican Terrace, Speenhamland, Newbury?
Am I right in thinking it has been demolished?
But are there any old photographs or maps anywhere?

If it usn't Pelican Terrace it is very like it. There aren't that many designs of these terraces but Pelican Terrace had all the features here. Yes it has been demolished.
Only part of the terrace is in the picture but it looks like the end of the terrace furthest from the camera. In which case if would be No 5 (three beyond the woman, 8 in the terrace).

It has distinctive brickwork, so I can see it's not Westbourne Terrace. I wonder if Pelican Terrace was parallel to it, where Angel Court is now? It's not named on old maps online (unless I'm looking in the wrong place!)

Not Angel Court (that replaced much of Goswell Row), Pelican Terrace ran parallel to Westbourne Terrace to the east. It's loss provided back gardens for that side of Westbourne Terrace.
The brickwork is distinctive but far from unique - but it matched that of Pelican Terrace. Given the other information you have I'd be pretty confident in the ID.

Thanks for the map (link works) - that makes things much clearer. I only found a similar naming Westbourne Terrace and not much else.
I think the top end of Goswell Row became Tanner Court - Angel Court links Pelican Lane to Corporation Cottages.
I wonder if the Museum or Library have a photo? I'll contact them.

My mistake - I'm better on old names than current ones!
If it's Pelican Terrace, and I'm pretty sure it is, then it is definitely No 5. I've just spotted the drainpipe, which was in the middle of the terrace between 4 and 5.
According to local directories the Barlows lived there 1898/9 to 1916 - which would, I think, match pretty well with the post card back. I'd be more sure if Roger Vaughan's website hadn't gone massively awry recently so I shall have to seek an alternative photo back dating source!
It's a little odd that the directories all list A Barlow? Even odder the Lloyd George Domesday has Mark Ballard at No 5 in 1911/12. Just goes to show that directories are not the most accurate source!

And yes, the museum does have a photo (much later than yours) - a copy might be in the photo folders in their library. IIRC the library gave all their photos to the museum.

Thank you Stan - that 1880 map is also very good for finding the various courts off Northbrook and Bartholomew Streets.
Newburychap - both 1901 and 1911 censuses have Mark Ballard at No.4, Elisha & Hannah Barlow at No.5, and Alfred Barlow [their son] at No.7.
Alfred's son Walter is the Barlow on the WW1 memorial.
A ground level photo should clinch it.

'Lloyd George' & Cosburn's 1912 directory. Can't both be right, quite possibly both wrong!

All I can think of for the Lloyd George record is that the numbering has been done from the wrong end of the terrace - No 1 entered in the valuation as No 8.
Easy to check, I suppose, but I don't have access to the records - where did you get it, Newburychap?

The LG agrees with the directory for No 6 (T Smith in both) and No 7 (Alfd Barlow & A Barlow). LG has No 8 empty (Mrs Westall is there for several years in the directories). All four owned by Richard Ravenor. It doesn't give occupants for 1 to 4 - it seems that the owner did not return his form.
The Lloyd George books are in the National Archives (IR 58).

1911 address is 5 Pelican Terrace
Elisha's death certificate is 5 Pelican Terrace (11 May 1916)
I don't have Hannah's death certificate, but her entry in Berks Burials (23 Feb 1912) gives Pelican Terrace (no number)

I thought I would update with a happy outcome.
West Berks Museum have sent me a photo of Pelican Terrace taken in 1961; it shows the whole row from the Pelican Lane end.
There are some extra drainpipes and cables for (presumably) electricity, and the front wall has gone, but it is clearly the same row as in my photograph. The brickwork matches, as do open sash windows and the lintels, including the door ones which are slightly lower than ones above the downstairs windows.
I can’t post the Museum’s photo because of copyright but the reference is NEBYM1995 72.28 for any local folk who want a peek.
So my photo does not show Elizabeth Barlow nee Coxhead in the 1930’s – as I had always thought – but her mother-in-law Hannah Barlow nee Carter Cook (my 2xg grandmother) in 1910/11.
Many, many thanks to everyone who helped track down Pelican Terrace.
