Hi
In the 1911 Census, members of my extended family lived in a 21-roomed house called "The Grove" at Malpas, Newport
I'm fairly familiar with Newport but have no idea where this house was or if it still exists
My family were still there in 1922
Anyone with knowledge of this property?
Thank you
Rich

Have you looked at the 1911 enumerators schedule which should give some idea where it is located in relation to other properties

The two residences next door are both "Grove Lodge", housing a coachman and a gardener
Then we have a labourer living in "a shed", now listed as Cwmbran
Other addresses are mainly individual houses (such as Bryn Glas), Malpas with no street address

Is this the same place in 1901

There is/was a Grove Park just off the Pillmawr Road and now west of the A4042. Long time ago (50years) but I think there was a large house there also.

Thank you, yes
Appears to be Caerleon Road, hence the proximity to the Cwmbran shed

That is good :) I don't know the area so pleased I could help a bit.

The Grove is on this 1936 map https://www.old-maps.co.uk/#/Map/331258/190439/12/100704

As Stan's map ref shows the Grove is just off the Pillmawr Road (sometimes called old roman road by locals) does lead to Caerleon. Not to be confused with the Caerleon Road which runs along the other side of the River Usk.
seems a lodge is still standing http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/1745996

I am actually selling a watercolour depicting the gardens at the Grove, Malpas painted in 1923.Its initalled H J W and on the back of the painting it states it belonged to William Ford and Matilda Ford nee Jordan, and it says it the Garden of the Grove facing River Usk.
