Are you trying to go backwards or forwards so we don't duplicate what you have.  What exactly are you after  :-\

Normallynne has replied to me by PM.

They have details after his birth but are looking to go backwards including his baptism.  Birth details come from Army record.

Hi Normalynne

Unless the information requested is about living people or you wish to exchange email addresses off-forum, there is no need for Rootschatters to send information on the personal message system.

If there is info to share, please post it openly so that we can all see what is known or has been found, others will then be happier to contribute and may have further things to add. Chatters here have access to all sorts of resources and may be put off posting if they think it has all been done already, behind the scenes.

Please note that many people find the site using internet search engines and if the details aren't posted, chatters might miss out on potential links/relatives.

Ok, sorry, I am new to this.

I am looking to go backwards but don't know the names of Charles parents or siblings, I suspect he had a brother called John Bennett as there is one in the same regiment and they were both masons from Chard, born two years apart but no birth for either one so far either in Chard or surroundings.

Hi and welcome to Rootschat is this man a relative or forming part of a one name study, his Service record gives b 1791 b Chard Service No: 940 62nd Regiment of Foot, mentions a John also a Mason, he served for many years, and his record contains pages that at present I cannot go through due to time.

Hopefully someone can assist further.

Thanks - he is my ggg grandfather and I am trying to write a book about my relatives but can't go back beyond Charles Bennett as I have no birth or parents.  I have all his life information up until his death in India in 1845.  He was in the 46th of foot, then 62nd.

I wonder why the births aren't anywhere?  It isn't just him, several births never appear.  Even my parents marriage in Ireland is nowhere but I have the original so don't care!

Any help much appreciated.

He married a 14 yr old widow Jane McClay or McCoy in 1825 in Poonamallee, Madras, India. I have no maiden name for her & can't find her 1st husband who was a soldier in 46th with Charles according to family tradition. They had 6 children. I only know Jane's dob from her death info in 1853. She was born in 1811 but I don't know where.

Charles was in NSW with 46th from 1813-1817 then Madras.

:) Makes you wonder at what age Jane married her first husband at?
Is this shown on his record?

Apparently the military paid an allowance until a girl reached 14 - I think it is possible that she married a David McCoy in 1825 sometime and he died in June of that year.  He was also in the 46th.  She then must have married Charles who was probably a friend of David's.  There is no record of this marriage though which is odd.  Also the second marriage says with banns but can't find any banns in India section of Ancestry or FYP or FS.
