Title: Monumental Inscriptions
Post by: macwil on Saturday 03 February 18 14:04 GMT (UK)
Are they called this because they use extremely large script or because they're extremely long?? ??? ;D

That being a Monumental question, it is possible that there exists, a Monumental answer, but what it actually is, poses problems as a Monumental effort would be required to fully cover the Monumental reason for said Monumental question, and I am unable to add answering Inscriptions here at present, so the answer will have to wait for the Monumental efforts of others  ::) ::) ::)

Here lies Ivor Davies of Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch is pretty much monumental.
I understand his headstone is now the North stand of Cardiff Arms Park.

It doesn't do the tonsils much good either.   ;D
As I found out as 12 year old scout on a camping trip to Llanbedr.

Truly wonderful answers and responses here. Perhaps we ought to preserve this topic, as a monument in itself?
(In aspic, perhaps, as tongues are so firmly in cheeks?)

I remember reading and photographing one for a fellow rootschatter, it had the name and dates but nothing else, nearby was his wife, full of praise for a loving and patient wife and mother etc.

I think the kids were trying to tell us something  :) :) :)

Steady on, chaps - while there's definitely a place for fun, remember that for the OP, this might be a question of grave importance.

Be careful some of those headstones are none too safe these days.

Our local cathedral coffee shop has a nice patio area, all the stones have inscriptions on them.

Oh, I really hope that the O P isn't sitting sobbing in a corner somewhere thinking we don't take such queries seriously! It's written in tablets of stone that we always do.... isn't it? Or are those the ones that were made into crazy paving last week?
I chuckle at each new entry. Some are simply brilliant. There must be a lot of sit-down comics out there ... have you ever tried typing standing up?

Ooh, a nice slab of granite with water trickling down, look good on my patio as as a water feature, let me know when it’s available will you.
