Which Newcastle?

NSW Australia or Tyne and Wear NE England?

Maybe you could ask a moderator to move your request to a more appropriate board rather in the Common Room? :)

Adoption records aren't generally available to the public in England, and definitely aren't found in libraries.  There are people on RootsChat who know a great deal about this subject so I'd wait for one of them if I were you.

I do RootsChat look ups for people relating to the North Tyneside/Newcastle area.  However, I have never come across adoption records at the library.

Perhaps, you could try contacting the Civic Centre in Newcastle to see if they could help steer you in the right direction regarding your search.

Best Wishes :)

The Library has Adopted children's index 1927 to 1969 and Adopted children's index 1970 - 2015 http://www.rootschat.com/links/01lhk/

Well, I didn't know that they held this register.  All being well, I will probably be able to go there in the morning for you.  If this is something a member of the public can view I will certainly do a look up for you.

If you don't wish to put details on here send me a pm.

Best Wishes :)

You need the name after adoption and year of birth before you start.

If you can't find the fiche in the GRO cabinets with all the other GRO fiche, then let me know and I'll check when I'm at the British Library either this week or next.

The fiche are in many parts:

by year of adoption not year of birth
1927-1946
1947-1951
then yearly 1952-1969

After 1969 the records are by year of birth not year of adoption.

The only information on the fiche will be the adopted name, maybe a year of birth not always, the date the adoption was entered in the records, and a volume and entry number.

It depends who the adoption certificate is for as to whether you can then have access to the adoption files.

If it your file, you have to apply to have access to your file and undergo counselling with a qualified intermediary.

If you are not the child of a deceased adopted person, you may not be eligible. Even if you are the child of a deceased adopted person, you have to approach the local authority/social services where the adoption took place.

There shouldn't be a problem getting the adoption certificate though if it was before 1967.

Thank you altho I wonder about when the register doesn't give DOB and only gives date of entry because GRO require Don on their online form

Make sure you are applying for an adoption certificate not a birth certificate and that you tick the yes box when asked if you have the reference. Their system will ask for the year of adoption you can enter the year after their birth. It is most important that you have the volume and entry numbers and the correct spelling of the name.

If you do not know the exact date of birth enter 01/01 and the year of birth eg 01/01/1945

The GRO birth index also does not give exact dates of birth.

If they have died in England and Wales, their age at death or date of birth will be shown in the death index.

Are they still alive?

As this may be to do with living people can you send me the names your are looking for and what you do know on a pm and next time I'm at the British Library, I'll have a look.

Your answer also answers your previous comments, you are nowhere near enough a close relative to obtain the files.
