Title: Need help finding a marriage
Post by: ghostnorris on Tuesday 06 February 18 01:39 GMT (UK)
I'm looking for the marriage of Thomas Eccles' parents. Thomas is found on the 1911 census living in Denaby, Yorkshire, born 1910, Denaby Main, son of Haller/Waller/Walter Eccles, born abt. 1870, Castleford, Yorkshire and Annie (Horton), born abt. 1874, Tunstall, Staffordshire.

Thomas' birth certificate has his mother's maiden name as Horton and his father's first name as Walter (despite variations on this on at least two censuses), and the 1911 census has the marriage of his parents being about 1898. But I just can't find it, and I need it to identify Annie's family, since there's no obvious Tunstall family that is hers.

I don't know where they married, but their first child was born in the Rotherham area. There is a Walter Eccles married in Rotherham in 1899, but not to an Annie or any variation thereof.

I'm fairly sure Walter Eccles is the one shown in 1871 as born in 1870 in Whitwood, Yorkshire, son of T Eccles (Thomas) and Mary, so it's just Annie's family I can't find, so the marriage certificate is essential.

Where is the family in 1901?

Is he the Thomas Walter Eccles in 1901 with wife Sarah at Bridge St, Wath?

Thomas Walter Eccles 30 born Castleford
Sarah 39 Blaxton
Maud Sheridan 9 Stepdaughter Doncaster
Evelin Sheridan 6 Stepdaughter born Swinton

Thomas Walter Eccles married Sarah Sheridan in the June quarter of 1899 at Rotherham, but by 1911 Sarah Eccles has reverted to the surname Sheridan and is living in Colne, Lancs with her two daughters, claiming to be a widow who was married for 32 years.

Could it be that Thomas Walter & Annie never married?

You mean Walter ...not Thomas. 😊

Yes, which just made me realise that the 1898/99 marriage date given on the 1911 census is actually for his marriage to his first wife (Sarah Sheridan), not his current one. Knowing that, I'll broaden my search of years Walter and Annie might have married. If they married at all, it may even have been as late as 1910.

Sarah Sheridan was still alive in 1911 so Walter cannot have remarried before then as it would be bigamous.

Annie may have been married before, so although her maiden name is correctly Horton [as on Thomas' 1910 birth registration] she would have married Walter [if at all  ;)]  under another name.

ADDED: However there are no small step children living with Walter & Annie in 1911.

The 1911 says that Annie has had 8 children, but I can't find that many Eccles/Horton births.

With them is daughter Mabel aged 7, 1904, but I cant find a birth for her as Eccles mmn Horton.

There is a birth in Rotherham that would fit, but as Smith:
SMITH, MABEL    mmn HORTON  1904  D Quarter in ROTHERHAM  Volume 09C  Page 820

Other Smith/Horton births include Ada in 1900, and her burial in 1902 has the address as Denaby Main. Deleted - this seems to be a diffierent Ada

Possible family in 1901 at 68 William St, Swinton - RG13/4402/71/12
John Smith 30 b Elsecar
Annie Smith 27 born Chesterton, Staffs
Mary Smith 4 b Swinton
Alice 3 b Swinton
Ada 1 b Swinton

Chesterton & Tunstall are only a few miles apart.

Marriage 25 Dec 1892 at Swinton
John George Smith 22 1/2 Bachelor Miner 67 William St. Father = William Smith, Miner, Deceased
Annie Horton 18 3/4 Spinster 11 Whitelee Road. Father = Robert Horton, Iron Worker
Wits: Arthur Horton, Martha Horton

In 1881 there is a Robert Horton aged 38 in Tunstall with wife & children, including Hannah aged 7 who could be Annie, and also a son named Arthur who may be the Arthur who witnessed the marriage.

There is a marriage in Mexborough in 1891 that would seem to be the Arthur & Martha who witnessed Annie Horton's marriage to John George Smith.  Same father's details:

22 Jun 1891 Mexborough
Arthur Horton 20 Bachelor Miner Simpsons Place, Mexborough. Father = Robert Horton, Iron Worker
Martha Bower 18 Spinster same address.  Father = Joseph Bower Deceased Bottle Maker.

In 1891 Hannah Horton aged 19 & born Chesterton is in Mexborough working as a domestic servant.

Hopefully ghostnorris will be getting notifications of these findings. Looks like Annie's parents may have been found
to identify Annie's family, since there's no obvious Tunstall family that is hers.
see Jomot's reply #9.
