Hi

You haven't given any details of when he was born.  Have you looked for him on the 1901 census to establish his birthyear and birthplace?

Have you checked Scotlands People for a marriage for his parents?

The free index on Scotlands People has a match for his parents marriage in 1871 in Lanarkshire - Anderston

Don't know where Wigtownshire has come from - here's the 1881 entry - 62 Commerce St Glasgow

James McDowall    41 b Ireland - storeman
Isabella McDowall    34 b Stornoway, Invernesshire
Donald  7 b Glasgow
James Derby    45 lodger b Ireland
Mary Derby    49 lodger b Glasgow
Parish Glasgow Govan ED 4 Page 15 Line 2

Bit of guesswork here as there are several Isabella McDonald's b Inverness around the same birthyear

You will need to download a copy of the 1871 marriage cert to get her parents names - but if her father was Donald occ ships carpenter and if her mother was "Jess" then there is an 1851 entry for Renfrewshire showing her father was born Inverness and her mother Egypt

I see lots of McDowells in Kirkmabreck and at one point in Creetown.
