I`ve only just heard the sad news of the death of Hannah Hauxwell, at the end of January.
She always seemed so cheerful, in spite of the harsh life she led, before she left her farm on retirement.
The documentary that was made of her life led her to experiences she probably would never have dreamed of.

I remember the documentary - she was such an interesting woman, and such a hard life. I have just watched a short piece about her 90th birthday, and she was still very "with it".

She eventually left the farm and went to live in the village.
She had so many precious possessions that there were lots of boxes, she could not unpack them all.
She was a natural lady, polite and gracious ,without any airs and graces .
Her knowledge of her forbears and indeed the whole area`s was phenomenal.
The programmes were lovely, perhaps they will be shown again.

Remember well the original television programme about her and was sad to read of her death; the Times had a full and interesting obituary for her, including the fortuitous reasons for the programme. A truly remarkable woman, RIP.

When I saw the heading "Hannah Hauxwell" on this post I thought " oh no please"
Sadly it seems as though her time has come.
I have only just finished reading all the books about her life and cannot help but think how remarkable and resilient she was. Anyone who saw the original documentary would always remember this lady in her torn mac and her endearing smile. What a legend. What a loss. RIP

The original programme was one of a series. Another programme was about a family with 4 or 5 school-age children. They seemed lovely people as well. I wondered whether any of the children took over the farm. I have a book about the series somewhere.

Remember watching the documentary on TV and reading the books, enjoyed them so much. She was a real 'gentlewoman'. I would have loved to chat with her. I hope she passed peacefully, and was well-cared for (we are so lucky that the people who work in the caring professions are so kind, speaking from the experience of my mother recently moving to a care home as a consequence of advancing dementia).
